Jets Hard Knocks: Second Season of HBO Series Would Doom New York

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Distractions littered the New York Jets' clubhouse last season.

That's why appearing in a second season of HBO's Hard Knocks would be disastrous for a franchise that is starting to become the laughing stock of the NFL.

At the launch of the NFL's new pop-up store in New York on Monday, Jets owner Woody Johnson said he wouldn't rule out the Jets joining forces with HBO again. This comes after the Jets traded for Tim Tebow, whose hype and buzz has reached astronomical levels.

Johnson said on Monday, via the Star-Ledger: "I have heard that, but we have yet to receive a formal invitation. When we do, we will take a look at it."

Johnson did admit that the Jets received an informal invitation, but couldn't respond unless it was a formal one.

The Jets are located in New York, which is dramatic enough in itself. But they continue to invite distractions, even after the locker room called out Mark Sanchez last season and LaDainian Tomlinson called it the worst environment he'd ever been in during his career. Did I mention that the Jets finished a disappointing 8-8 last season, missing the playoffs after Rex Ryan proclaimed they would win the Super Bowl?

Giving Plaxico Burress another chance last season was one thing, but this has started to become absurd. The smart thing for the Jets to do would be to head into next season with as few distractions as possible.

But, alas, that is not the Jets' way.

Johnson's stance on Hard Knocks is just another example of how out of touch this franchise has become. If Johnson wants to create the most entertaining team in the league and make his team a running reality TV show, then, by all means, think about doing another season of Hard Knocks. But if he wants to construct a Super Bowl winner, he needs to stop thinking of the Jets as merely a money-maker and a sound bite.

And that goes for everyone in the Jets' locker room.
