Why I Am Rooting for the Arizona Cardinals to Win the Super Bowl

Scott FenderJan 19, 2009

Arizona, the state that refuses to go on the daylight savings time. The state that does not win anything. The state that was admitted just before Alaska and Hawaii. The state that does not win anything, is going to win the Super Bowl.

The Cardinals are on a hot streak just like the Giants of last year, but this is a whole new season. This year the Cardinals are passing the ball like it is a game of catch with friends. They play flag football out there on the gridiron. They do not run, they do not play great defense, and they won the worst division in sports. They have all these reasons as to why they cannot win, but believe me they will win.

But this is not that type of article, I am rooting for the Cardinals come Super Bowl Sunday and let me tell you why.

1. I have nothing against the Steelers. My sister is a huge Steelers fan. I loved Jerome Bettis as a kid. But I am rooting against them for the same reason I did the last time they went to the Superbowl. They cannot get to six rings before my beloved 49ers. I refuse to let another team take the lead.

In other sports teams have built dynasties and won multiple championships and has put itself head and shoulders above other franchises. The Yankees and Celtics do not need to worry for a few decades about someone catching up to them. Football is totally different. Three teams at five Championships, one chance for the Steelers to take the lead and if I have any say then it will not happen.

2. The NFC West respect is important. While the Cardinals are our rivals during the season, I have to root for my division foe to make our 7-9 record look better. The NFC West gets no love from anyone and really why should they. Three of the teams in the division are looking at a top 10 pick. The Rams completed back to back 2-14 seasons, and the division does not seem to be improving at great strides as three out of four coaches were fired last season.

But, a Cardinal victory can change that. Who cares that the 49ers will play the defending Superbowl champions next year? I am looking forward to it. In fact that leads right to reason number three.

3. Having the 49ers beat the defending Superbowl Champion two times next year is too good to pass up. If Warner stays in Arizona then the 49ers can gain plenty of momentum with each win against that team.

Arizona and the 49ers have a very low key rivalry going for them. They have met on Monday Night Football for two or three years in a row with those games becoming some of the best of the year. I still remember Alex Smith's game winning drive last year and will probably never forget the Frank Gore goal line run that was a stumble away from a victory and possibly a different ending to the season.

4. Kurt Warner keeps Matt Leinart out of the league. I do not like Leinart at all. This stems from my distaste for USC but even more for his over all "douchebagness", if you will. I like Kurt, he is a great guy but I could care less who the QB as long as it is not Leinart.

5. Finally, I have money riding on the game. And when you bet money on a team, then you better damn sure root for them.
