Auburn Football: Quarterback Kiehl Frazier Is Shining Early in Spring Practice

The conclusion to Auburn's quarterback battle probably won't come until sometime in August, but exit polls show sophomore Kiehl Frazier with an early lead in the three-man battle between himself, returning starter Clint Moseley and true freshman Zeke Pike.

With Moseley nursing a sore shoulder and sitting out of Saturday's closed scrimmage, Frazier shined.  Auburn didn't release statistics, but according to his father's Twitter account, Frazier completed 10-of-14 passes and connected on two touchdowns.  Those two touchdown passes were long touchdowns to Emory Blake and Travante Stallworth.  

This comes on the heels of a strong start to practice that has Frazier getting more and more comfortable with new offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler's offense.  

Frazier seemed confident after the scrimmage:

"I feel a lot more comfortable just knowing this offense," Frazier said. "I think I know this offense, even though we've only been it just two weeks, probably better than I knew Coach Malzahn's, even at the end. I feel a lot more comfortable."

It appears that Frazier has let the scars of last season heal, and he's not going to dwell on the past.  Former offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn only allowed Frazier to throw 12 passes last season, and the only passes that were truly meaningful were two interceptions on the road in his home state of Arkansas. 

Bottom line: Malzahn didn't put Frazier in the position to succeed in 2011.

While he was used primarily as a Wildcat quarterback last season, Frazier can pass.  He threw for 3,817 yards and 48 touchdowns as a senior at Shiloh Christian School in Springdale, Ark.  He was named the the All-USA Offensive Player of the Year by USA Today in 2010.  

He's got the talent, and it appears that the new offense at Auburn suits Frazier well.  The battle will likely go on through summer, but if Frazier keeps this up, he's going to make the decision very easy for the Auburn coaching staff.
