Family Affair III: The Colons

Jabot SingleterryCorrespondent IJanuary 19, 2009

The Colons are a wrestling family that you don't really hear much about. The Colons have established their legacy mostly in Puerto Rico. But are known in the States as well.

Carlos Colon

Born on July 18,1948 in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico. While growing up in the poor part of Santa Isabel, Carlos Colon was one of seven children, he and his family migrated to Brooklyn in 1961.

He admired wrestlers such as Antonino Rocca and Miguel Perez. He became a member at the gym where they trained at. They taught him wrestling holds and in return he'd clean the gym to pay his dues.

His first wrestling match was in Boston, Massachusetts against WWE Hall of Famer Bobo Brazil. He was paid fifteen U.S. dollars.

Feeling homesick and noticing the void of pro wrestling in Puerto Rico, Colon and Victor Jovica founded Capitol Sports Promotion which aired wrestling matches on Saturdays and Sundays.

Invited American wrestlers would come wrestle in his company on occasions, stars such as "Macho Man" Randy Savage", Ric Flair, Bruiser Brody, Stan Hansen.

Carlos Colon's nemesis was Abdullah the Butcher. Their rivalry would spill out into two decades of bloody battles. Colon has stated, "Eighty percent of the blood I've shed, I've shed a the hands of Abdullah."

He defeated Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in Puerto Rico on January 6, 1983. His title reign was not made official, because it never made it on NWA television. He dropped the title back to Flair on January 23, 1983. (making Flair an unofficial seventeen time world champion.)

After a short stint in WWE, Colon briefly retired to teach his sons, Carlos Colon, Jr. and Edwin Colon (Carlito and Primo) to help train them.

He officially retired on July 19, 2008 at Aniversario 2008.

Colon has two daughters, Stacy and Melissa.

Primo Colon

Born on December 21, 1982, Primo is the youngest of Carlos Colon's children.

He debuted in his father's company, World Wrestling Council. He competed in the Cruiserweight division, feuding with the likes of Damien Steele, Kid Kash and Rey Mysterio.

Primo won his fist title from Damien Steel, when he defeated him for the WWC World Junior Heavyweight Championship.

He competed against Christian Cage at Aniversario 2007 on July 13,2007. The match ended in a double disqualification.

Now signed with the WWE, he wrestles under the name Primo and is one half of the WWE Tag Team Champions with his brother Carlito.

Carlito Colon

Carlito was born on February 21, 1979. He made his debut in WWC, where he feuded with Ray Fernandez over the WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship.

Carlito won the WWC Universal Heavyweight on eleven different occasions and has won the WWC World Tag Team Championship with his brother Eddie (Primo)and with Konnan.

In his WWE debut match, Carlito defeated John Cena for the United States Championship. After feuding with John Cena, Carlito would feud with Big Show after Big Show refused to be Carlito's enforcer. Colon tricked Big Show into eating a poison apple, this culminated into a match at Judgment Day in which Carlito defeated Big Show. Carlito debuted his interview segment Carlito's Cabana on Smackdown.

In 2005, Carlito was drafted to RAW, where he defeated Shelton Benjamin for the Intercontinental Championship in his debut. This would make Carlito the second Puerto Rican to hold the Intercontinental title, the first being Pedro Morales. At Unforgiven, Carlito would lose the Intercontinental Championship to Ric Flair after submitting to Flair's patented Figure Four Leg Lock.

Carlito has been involved in several angles which involved the WWE Championship. Carlito made his WrestleMania debut at WrestleMania 22. He and Chris Masters challenged Big Show and Kane for the World Tag Team Championship, but lost after Masters accidently hit Carlito. This ignited into a feud between Carlito and Masters. Both men met at Backlash where Carlito defeated Masters after an assist from the ropes.

During 2006, Carlito would try to regain the Intercontinental Championship, but never accomplished that goal. During 2006, he feuded with Randy Orton, Orton defeated Carlito after catching him in the air with an RKO.

Prior to WrestleMania 23, Carlito expressed his dissatisfaction with WWE management for not having plans to book him in Pay-Per-Views.

Carlito turned heel and feuded with Flair again. Flair defeated him by submission at Judgment Day.

At WWC's Aniversion 2007, Carlito faced Razor Ramon. Ramon called Carlito a rip off of his character, as a way to promote the match and called Carlito, Mini Razor. Carlito defeated Razor Ramon with the Backstabber.

Carlito defeated Sandman in a Singapore Cane on a pole match at the Great American Bash. He lost to Triple H at Unforgiven where the no disqualification rule only applied to him and not Triple H. On the fifteenth RAW Anniversary, Carlito lost to Jeff Hardy in a ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship.

Carlito was drafted to Smackdown in the 2008 Supplemental draft. He asked for vacation time and attended his father's official retirement ceremony at Aniversario 2008, where he wrestled against Ray Gonzalez.

Carlito returned to Smackdown and teamed with his brother Primo to defeat Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. They are the first real brothers to win the titles since The Hardys.

Fact: Carlito's mother, Nancy, is Canadian.

The Colons will indeed be one of the wrestling family dynasties to leave it's mark on the business whether it's Carlito and Primo's high flying abilities or Carlos Colon's blood drenched battles with Abdullah the Butcher. While Carlito and Primo bring and build the Colon legacy over to the United States and continue their father's legacy, one thing is certain they will not be forgotten in Puerto Rico.

Other famous Colons :

Melissa (sister/ not in the wrestling business)
