NFL Draft 2012: Power Ranking the Top 5 Running Backs Available
The NFL draft is on its way and before the first round begins on April 26, scouts, coaches and general managers across the league are looking to distinguish the top talents from each other.
The running back position boasts a handful of skilled prospects this spring, including a national champion.
So, who are the best RBs set to hear their name called in the 2012 NFL Draft and where do they rank?
Join Bleacher Report as we break down the five best running backs available this April.
5. Lamichael James, Oregon
No one can deny Lamichael James' accomplishments in college football, but it remains to be seen if his talents can translate to the NFL, where bigger and stronger defenses will be waiting for him. James posted an impressive 1,805 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in 2011 with the Oregon Ducks, but failed to take home the Heisman Trophy Award.
At 5'8", 194 pounds there are legitimate and warranted concerns about James' size, but if he can stay healthy, his speed will be his biggest asset, which will be on display throughout his shifty displays at the next level.
4. David Wilson, Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech's David Wilson ran like a wild man for the Hokies in 2011, rushing for 1,709 yards and nine scores on only 290 carries. Wilson's biggest strength is likely his top-end speed in the open field, but he will need to bulk up a little if he is to survive consistent hits at the next level.
Wilson is a hard runner as well and will certainly impress in the NFL with his motor and drive to move the chains after first contact.
3. Lamar Miller, Miami
It's hard to say exactly what an NFL team will get if they draft Miami's Lamar Miller. He certainly impresses with his speed and shiftiness at first glance, but he was redshirted in 2009, giving him just 23 games of college football experience total.
The shoulder injury he suffered in September 2011 has caused some concern over his durability, but his size and character may help him stay healthy as a pro. Miller is almost 5'11" and weighs about 212 pounds.
2. Doug Martin, Boise State
Boise State's Doug Martin is the ideal teammate and at the same exact time a coveted running back. Martin has exceptional build for a running back, even though he is somewhat small in terms of height, and his speed is more than good enough for the next level.
Martin rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns last season with the Broncos, who used him effectively in the passing game as well as on the ground.
1. Trent Richardson, Alabama
BCS national champion Trent Richardson is by far the best running back available this spring and will likely go in the top 10, if not the top five to the Cleveland Browns or Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Richardson is a powerful talent, who measures 5'9", 228 pounds.
The sturdy RB rushed for 1,679 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2011 with the Crimson Tide, leading them to a one-loss, championship season with his durable frame and strong running.
