Demetrius Bell: How His Departure Would Shake Up Buffalo Bills Draft Needs

Erik FrenzMar 30, 2012

The Buffalo Bills have stockpiled talent at several spots in free agency, but with the dust settling on the frenzy, there could be one spot where they still need a lot of help.

And it just so happens to be one of the most important positions on the roster.

Free agent offensive tackle Demetrius Bell has been making the rounds, and his latest stop has him in Philadelphia visiting the Eagles according to Howard Eskin of NBC 10 Philadelphia. That news comes hot on the heels of another report surrounding the Eagles and their situation at tackle.

So it looks like two teams need the services of one offensive tackle pretty badly. The Eagles showed last year that they're not afraid to go big in free agency, just as the Bills have shown this year.

The problem for Buffalo is that they've already spent so big this year, it's unlikely they'll be able to go toe-to-toe with big market Philly in a bidding war for Bell's services.

The Bills have long been projected to target Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd in the 2012 NFL Draft to be held in April. They could use to add another big time pass-catching threat outside the numbers.

That pick would be a luxury for the Bills. If they lose Bell, though, a tackle with their first pick would be almost a necessity.

Their depth at tackle is scary, and though Andy LeVitre could potentially play there if needed, he's better used on the inside.

The Bills may or may not get an opportunity to match a potential offer from the Eagles, and if they don't, they should definitely start looking ahead to the draft for tackles to step in. Matt Kalil is not likely to fall out of the top five, so the Bills should take a long look at Iowa tackle Riley Reiff. B/R NFL draft guru Matt Miller mocked Reiff to the Bills in his recent seven-round projection, and if Bell leaves the fold, that pick could be necessitated.
