Chelsea Transfer Rumours: 10 Big-Money Buys on Roman Abramovich's Radar
Chelsea continue to look like a renewed squad under Roberto Di Matteo, as the interim manager has them into the last eight of the Champions League, as well as moving closer and closer to taking over fourth place in the English Premier League.
Roman Abramovich may have waited till the last minute to sack Andre Villas-Boas, but so far the move seems to be paying off—the club were sputtering under the young Portuguese, who appeared not yet ready for the task that is the English Premier League.
With summer fast-approaching and players already looking at exits from Stamford Bridge, the owner has some big-money moves rumored in the press.
It will take a lot to replace the legends of old such as Didier Drogba, who is expected to leave, as well as Frank Lampard, if he chooses to look for greener grass elsewhere.
This summer could be one of the biggest in the club's last few seasons.
Radamel Falcao
1 of 11Athletic Madrid striker Radamel Falcao has been linked to a move to Chelsea for the last few weeks.
Recently both Givemefootball.com and The Week have rumored him to be making a switch to Stamford Bridge.
On Monday, he was rumored by ESPN to be heading to either Chelsea or Manchester City.
The Guardian is also claiming that City are leading the way for the Blues target.
Demba Ba
2 of 11Newcastle would be hard-pressed to find a better partner for Demba Cisse, as the two have started to form a real bound on the English Premier League pitch.
However, the believed low value of Ba's buyout clause is thought to have Roman Abramovich licking his lips at a player that would be a great replacement for Didier Drogba.
Edinson Cavani
3 of 11It is no secret that Napoli's Edinson Cavani is a major transfer target of Chelsea.
The Uruguayan made quite a showing against the Blues in the UEFA Champions League and has had a great season domestically in Italy yet again.
Alexandre Pato
4 of 11Chelsea appear to still be interested in AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato, and no longer face competition with Paris St. Germain.
Pato's former boss Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly dropped his intention of signing the youngster (according to Goal.com), leaving Chelsea as the lone ones chasing him at the moment.
The Brazilian could be a great compliment to Fernando Torres and Juan Mata with his creative streak.
Stevan Jovetic
5 of 11Reports from Metro and Football Italia claim that Chelsea are in pursuit of yet another attacker in Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic.
The Montenegrin forward has bags of potential at only 22 years of age, and he has been thought to be on his way out of Florence since last summer.
Football Italia has said that the player's agent has already had contact with Chelsea over the move to Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.
Gonzalo Higuain
6 of 11Real Madrid star forward Gonzalo Higuain is another player based in the Spanish capital that Chelsea are believed to be interested in.
Although Manchester City looks to be the biggest player in the market for his signature, but Metro have him looking at a possible Chelsea transfer as well.
With Fernando Torres hitting form, the addition of a player like Higuain over the summer could see Chelsea once again have a strong set of goal scorers to take up the mantle that was carried by Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.
Milos Krasic
7 of 11Juventus winger Milos Krasic was thought to be a hot-ticket loan target for multiple clubs in January, but a move for him never materialized.
Chelsea and Tottenham are both thought interested in the player, according to the Daily Mirror.
However, they are not going to be able to pry him away for cheap, with Italy's Old Lady looking to reclaim at least €15 million for the player over the summer.
Hulk
8 of 11Perhaps the biggest-ticket target for Chelsea at the moment is FC Porto striker Hulk.
His massive buyout clause, rumored in the £85 million range, is likely to stop anyone from taking him out of Portugal.
However, that has not stopped both the Guardian and Fox Sports from claiming that the Blues are indeed back in the hunt for the Brazilian.
Arjen Robben
9 of 11Chelsea are still hopeful of pulling off a last gasp move for Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben.
The Daily Mail linked the Dutch international with a possible Stamford Bridge switch in the middle of March, but now the chances are swiftly fading away.
Robben in believed to be on the verge of penning a contract extension with Bayern, according to both ESPN Star Sports and SI.com.
Jose Mourinho
10 of 11If the rumors are true, there is truly no bigger-money target for the Blues than former manager Jose Mourinho.
Despite the short term success that interim manager Roberto Di Matteo has had with the club, there are still those that believe he is not the one to lead the club forward.
Mourinho was linked with a return to Stamford Bridge in March of this year by The Sun, and recently garnered support from former player Joe Cole, who is on loan to Lille from Liverpool this season, with comments in People.co.uk:
"I think there's a lot going on there but he would make it work. It's my club, and sometimes I see things happening and it frustrates me even more.
Looking in from the outside, they have fantastic players, fantastic role models, and they don't use them enough.
"
Conclusion
11 of 11Roman Abramovich is expected to dig deep this summer and spend big on fresh faces and talent for the aging Blues.
