MLB Power Rankings: Baseball's 10 Biggest Egos

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

Baseball players are the preeminent prima donnas. Their lucrative contracts are not riddled by a salary cap, and their egos are equally unfettered.

This list could go on and on. Every multi-million-dollar athlete has an ego. It is just a matter of how obvious  it is, and how brash the player is?

I decided to cut this list down to ten, and I did not limit this list to players. Some coaches and front-office personnel tend to think they are bigger than the athletes they pay to work for them.

Some readers may disagree, but in the spirit of this list, I am totally right about everything. Never mind, my ego is not that big.

Here are 10 baseball personalities who believe they can do no wrong.

10. Bobby Valentine

1 of 10

Bobby Valentine is known for running teams his way with no negotiations; he loves full control and is not afraid to say it.

Valentine is entering his first season as manager of the Boston Red Sox. Boston has some of baseball's best players, and egos to match.

Valentine's old-school approach does not always go over well. He is very direct with his words. Not long after arriving in Boston, he made Yankee comments to fuel the rivalry's fire.

Major League Baseball has not seen Valentine since his days as the New York Mets' skipper. Now he is back, and everyone should pay attention.

9. Prince Fielder

2 of 10

Prince Fielder is a tremendous hitter with a pampered lifestyle.

Fielder remained a free agent for a long time this offseason. That was partially because of Fielder's asking price.

The slugger demanded $25 million per year from potential suitors.

Asking for huge contracts in any sport is not a foreign idea. Athletes frequently chase money, and showcase their greed.

Instead of playing the game and signing with a team, Fielder played his game and allowed teams to fight over him for months.

We will see how big his ego really is this season. His ability to coexist with Miguel Cabrera will be a story worth following.

8. Billy Beane

3 of 10

Outside of Billy Beane, how many baseball figures can you name with a movie made about them while they are still involved in the game? I bet the answer is zero.

Beane's "Moneyball" strategy has been scrutinized since Michael Lewis's 2003 novel. Despite Beane's marginal success, his way of thinking has garnered a ton of attention.

Beane is a brilliant mind. His "Moneyball" philosophies rely on defense and value relative to cost.

There is a problem when a General Manager, and minority owner, of a team thinks he is this important.

It would be one thing if the book and movie had come out after he walked away from the game, but during? That should not fly.

7. Ozzie Guillen

4 of 10

Ozzie Guillen has not stopped talking since his managing career began in 2004. Guillen is a walking soundbite with the propensity for foot-in-mouth statements.

Some point to Guillen's love of the game as the reason for his big mouth.

Well, there are a lot of players who love the game, and I'd guess not everyone runs their mouth Guillen-style.

Guillen's statements are comical and infuriating, sometimes at the same time. He puts himself at the forefront of situations because of the size of his character.

Guillen will be under a bigger spotlight this season. I am sure he will have some whoppers for us this season.

6. Carlos Zambrano

5 of 10

Carlos Zambrano is a hot head. In his opinion, he is always right and people better recognize that.

Zambrano's temper stems from his ego. He does not like being overlooked, and wants everyone to include him among baseball's elite pitchers.

Newsflash, Carlos. That is not the case, and bashing water-coolers, fighting teammates or yelling at umpires will not help.

Zambrano is a cancer in the locker room and a constant troublemaker.

5. Derek Jeter

6 of 10

Derek Jeter has been a model player for his entire Yankee career, but under the surface lies an egotistical player.

Jeter loves to play shortstop. He does not want to take a pay cut to do it, and he does not want any other All-Star caliber player (Alex Rodriguez) to take his place.

Jeter is not brash like some of the others on this list. He is good, and he knows it. That is normal, but does not change the size of his head.

Jeter wants things to be done on his terms, and his terms only. He is a Hall-of-Fame player, and expects to be treated as such.

4. Manny Ramirez

7 of 10

Manny Ramirez decided to return to baseball with the Oakland Athletics, despite his pending 50-game suspension.

This is another example of Ramirez's tremendous ego.

Early in Ramirez's career, fans overlooked his antics and generally-lazy play because of his ridiculous talent at the plate. He seemed harmless.

As Manny's career has progressed, his image has deteriorated. He was a cancer in the Dodger clubhouse, and even in Boston before he departed.

He has had altercations with teammates, team personnel and Major League Baseball's front office.

Ramirez is among the most talented players to ever play the game. But, he thinks he is bigger than the game itself.

3. Hanley Ramirez

8 of 10

Hanley Ramirez's effort has been questioned throughout his career.

Ramirez loafs in the field, and does not seem to care at times. This has caused problems in the Marlins' dugout and clubhouse.

The Marlins signed Jose Reyes to a big contract this offseason. The deal will force Ramirez to give up his position (that he did not field well in the first place) in order to fit Reyes into the lineup.

Ramirez immediately voiced his displeasure, instead of viewing the Reyes addition the right way.

Baseball teams are supposed to win. Reyes will help the Marlins win, or at least give them a better shot.

Instead of seeing that, Ramirez just views the situation through his own selfish eyes.

2. Bryce Harper

9 of 10

Fans will have to wait to see Bryce Harper's ego firsthand, but Harper is already legendary for his arrogance.

Harper has blown kisses to opposing pitchers and run his mouth through the minor leagues. He is an all-world talent with an out-of-this-world ego.

Minor-league pitchers cannot stand up to Harper's golden-boy image, but established major-leaguers can.

If Harper does not change his tune, he will learn the hard way.

Would you blow kisses at Justin Verlander's fastball? I didn't think so.

1. Alex Rodriguez

10 of 10

Was there any doubt as to where Alex Rodriguez would fall on this list? A-Rod is among the most hated of athletes in the sports world, not just baseball.

Rodriguez carries himself in all the wrong ways. His pretty-boy image incenses many devoted baseball fans, and Dallas Braden.

Rodriguez has an extreme sense of entitlement. You can almost feel his condescending attitude by taking one look into his eyes.

A-Rod is one of the most polarizing figures in recent sports history. His playoff production and his attitude cause heated whispers in baseball circles.
