To Plaxico Or Not To Plaxico? That Is The Non-Question.

Jacques HamelJan 18, 2009

While a rabid crowd of fans have gathered to dispense mob justice on the beleaguered Talented receiver, I for one hope the American Justice system (which may or may not be synonymous with the NY Justice system) and cooler if not diplomatic heads in the Giants' brain thrust prevail.  Though the sociopolitical landscape require daft and politically correct discourse to navigate the loaded and disguised subterfuge of subdued hostilities, envy and animosity pent up between the true melting pot of economic advantage, working class, financial privilege, spoiled athletes and misguided concepts of poetic justice, juxtaposed against the [life and times] of a foolish act by an athlete acting foolishly.  Indeed that is long winded and maybe some will view it as condescending, but like it or not it is the reality of the matter.  The Giants will not dump or trade Burress unless equal value is returned and their need at the position is fulfilled.  To do otherwise would be the equivalence of basing critical business decisions on knee jerk emotional reactions.  Burress may be childish and irresponsible at times and the team has taken steps in the past to deal with his discretion's proportionally with the offense.  At the same time Burress has maintained a good team and professional standing if not outstanding on field contributions.  So an honest analysis of a stupid and obviously regretable act is that in trying to comply with an establishment's anti concealed weapon policy, Burress accidentally shot himself while surrendering his own fire arm.  For this he is judged, convicted and thrown to the wolves by some fans, sports writers and politicians who don't even have the courage to stand up for the same laws they attempt to impale Mr. Burress with.  Opportunistic, hypocritical and two faced in their vehement some fans and so called fans look to throw Burress to the wolves of the political / legal bureaucracy like he was a three time looser.  Those of us who care to think about it can remember the politically if not racially charged motivations of the NY gun and drug laws which are patently unconstitutional not to mention demonstrably biased and hypocritical in the execution of the laws as they are written.   But no one wants to go there with that aspect of the laws that are used to ( supposedly) treat law abiding citizens just as it would harden criminals.  Yes why don't we all espouse such narrow minded laws devised by cynical men in closed committees vying for Political capital at the next elections.  How sweet to their constituents the meaningless contortion of "tough on crime".  And don't get me started on Bloomberg a man who trampled laws to extend his claim on local power and has the nerve to trample Burress's right to due process for political capital.

So while the furur of the Burress incident takes on a life of its own the Giants will say and do what is logical while the circumstances are not in their control.  Should Burress escape incarceration and be available after March then I would fully expect him to be part of the team unless once again the mob justice mentality makes his stay with the team untenable and the Giants have to deal him in another trade of less then equal value like the Shocky trade.  And why not keep him?  With Plaxico in the fold the Giants don't have to expend large dollars to a free agent who has not played a down in the ultra competive NFC East.  They may not have to expend that high a draft pick this year on yet another prospective game breaker wr and would have the option to use picks to move up high in the draft to fill other needs.  With Plaxico in the fold the Giants would have a set salary cap at the position with him locked up with an incentive filled contract and the anticipation that Toomer may not be back.  They would have an established play maker on offense freeing them to find defensive play makers with the money they would have to use to replace him.  The Giants could not afford to just dump him and would be in desperate need of him should they have to incorporate a new offensive system into the playbook and we have already seen his value to the team just by his presence on the field.  In the case of Burress any notion of addition by subtraction would be sheer folly, particularly in the light of the sensationally charged events that has done wonders for ratings and news sales but little to cover both sides of the story.
