It really wasn't supposed to be an emotional match on Thursday, as one of the best teams in the league battled the Atlantic Division bottom-feeders in the Islanders.
Instead, a great wave of fear had to sweep over all of Pittsburgh the instant Crosby went down with a terrifying hit to the face.
Just moments into the second period, a faceoff ended with Islanders defender Dylan Reese controlling the puck.
As he attempted to get the puck down ice, he instead hit the superstar square in the face, causing the franchise player to hit the ice immediately.
If that weren't enough to have Penguins fans to shake their heads as if to say "what now?" Crosby left a pool of blood on the ice.
A player with lingering concussion issues seems to have skirted disaster on Thursday night.
His status will no doubt be a topic for the next couple days, but for now, the oft-injured player is back on the Penguins bench, and that is a good sign.
