College Football: 2013 Weekly Recruiting Roundup March 22-29

Michael FelderJun 7, 2018

Last week, we dipped our toe into the recruiting arena just a bit. Today, we're going to continue to look around the national landscape and grab some things that stand out as intriguing.

It is still early, and as we pointed out with the Malik Zaire to Notre Dame commitment, February is a long way off, so who knows what will happen as coaches scrap to flip players?

We'll start with Notre Dame, who added four 4-star players to its class for 2013 over the weekend.

Colin McGovern, Hunter Biven and Mike McGlinchey join the aforementioned Zaire to help Brian Kelly keep his hot streak going. Throw in more recent news that The Admiral's son, Cory Robinson, just committed to the Irish this week as well, according to ESPN.

Kelly is determined to boost the talent level of the Irish, and he's getting out there, hitting the pavement and it is paying off with kids pledging their commitments to the Fighting Irish.

On to another team that's just plugging along on the hot recruiting trail: Alabama. The Tide got a commitment from Lindale, Georgia offensive lineman Andy Dodd this week. Add him to a Tide class that already boasts eight other players committed to Nick Saban.

Dodd's a big, athletic kid that fits exactly what Saban is looking for: maulers on the offensive line.

South of Tuscaloosa, the Tide's rivals just snagged another commitment as well. Gene Chizik picked up a pledge from Carl Lawson this week.

Lawson's father, Carl Lawson Sr., was a fullback on Georgia Tech's 1990 national championship team, but apparently the Yellow Jackets were not a major player in his son's decision. As the younger Lawson stated, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"

My father wanted me to go to Auburn. He wanted me to commit the last time I was there. He likes Auburn. My family loves it. Last time I visited Auburn, I named them as my leader. This time, I committed.

"

Georgia, on the other hand, is seeing things get exciting in Athens. The Dawgs added Johnny O'Neal to their class, making it nine total for 2013 as far as commitments go. With a team set to start the season in the Top 10, it seems Mark Richt is aiming to lock up his state as best he can and most certainly not lose a kid to the Jackets.

The Dawgs' rival Florida added an 11th man to its class by getting lineman Rod Johnson to commit. Johnson most certainly would be something the doctor ordered in Gainesville, adding depth and strength along the offensive line.

Muschamp is attempting to raise the Gators' overall talent level, and 2013 seems to be off to a great start.

Michigan, a team that already has 16 commitments for the 2013 class, is excited for things to come.

Greg Webb has decided to attend the Wolverines' spring game, and the defensive tackle from New Jersey is among the nation's most sought-after big bodies. He is the type of player Greg Mattison needs up front to help clog the middle, so in a few weeks, expect the Wolverines to pull out all the stops.

Penn State lost the Danny O'Brien derby yesterday, and now head coach Bill O'Brien loses another battle. Ryan Switzer, a running back out of West Virginia, is committed to North Carolina and head coach Larry Fedora.

Switzer has some wheels, and the kid would be a welcome addition to Fedora's backfield in the new, up-tempo style.

In not-so-great news, Miami had a de-commitment today from speedster Levonte Whitfield. Kermit, as he is called, chose to reopen his recruitment in order to explore more options. Since it is still March, this is not exactly a negative for either party.

Whitfield gets a chance to explore his options while Miami has plenty of time to look at other kids to fill the spot.
