2012 NFL Draft: In a Perfect World the Tennesee Titans Select...
All this week, I'll be looking at whom AFC South teams would take if everything broke their way.
Teams should always take the best available player, regardless of need, but every once in a while the perfect "need" player is also the best player available. Obviously, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are not going to fall to the back of the first round, so we'll try to focus on players that could realistically land near where each team is drafting.
The Titans had two glaring holes in 2011: Run offense and pass rush. If things break right, the Titans could go a long way toward shoring up one of those in the first round. Tom Gower told us the other day that he would love to see David DeCastro fall to Tennessee, but it was the other player he mentioned that would be the perfect fit.
Fletcher Cox has been predicted by some to go as early 14th to Dallas, but should he fall just a little, the Titans would do a dance, then happily submit their draft card to Roger Goodell. Cox is a perfect fit with the Titans because he can do it all. He can play inside or outside. He is a strong run-defender, and has pass-rush ability.
The only worry for the Titans is where he fits in their scheme. He might be more of a 3-4 end than a 4-3. Of course the Titans can always move him inside to anchor a line that had the second lowest adjusted sack rate in the NFL. This is a line in serious need of a talent infusion, and talent is what Cox brings in spades.
The draft isn't the only way to build a pass rush, but it is the best way. The Titans could do something aggressive and inquire about Indianapolis defensive end Dwight Freeney, but giving up draft picks for a 32-year-old end doesn't make much sense.
In a perfect world, a top pass-rusher falls to No. 20, and the Titans scoop him up.
