WrestleMania 28: Shawn Michaels Will Save Undertaker vs. Triple H Match

Michael DixonMar 29, 2012

The absolute worst thing that you could ever be in the WWE (or any wrestling promotion) is predictable. If people know how a marquee match is going to turn out and how everything will go down, the buyrates will plummet in a big way.

If Triple H and The Undertaker had just decided to have a rematch from last year's WrestleMania match, we would know that The Undertaker would win. There would be no point in having Triple H come back to get his revenge and end the streak. If anyone is going to do that, it should be a younger guy who could use the big push. Triple H certainly doesn't need the bump that would come from beating The Undertaker.

But even if it's predictable that the Undertaker will move to 20-0 at WrestleMania, there are a lot of different ways that it could go down. That is what saves the match.

Scenario No. 1: Shawn Michaels calls a fair match

This may seem a little boring, but the eyes of both men will be on HBK for the whole time, so there will be plenty to look at. Will he help his buddy? Will he backstab his buddy?

There's enough tension between Shawn and both Triple H and The Undertaker to imagine either one happening. The threat is more than enough to carry the intrigue of the match, but it's not the only way that things can go down.

Scenario No. 2: Shawn Michaels costs Triple H the match

I love the possibilities here. Triple H gets The Undertaker knocked out cold, goes for the pin and his friend won't count. Heck, maybe Shawn will even hit Trips with some Sweet Chin Music.

Michaels has never lacked an ego, so this makes complete sense. If he can't find a way to beat The Undertaker and end the streak, nobody will—certainly not his best friend.

Scenario No. 3: Shawn Michaels tries to cost Undertaker

Obviously, HBK had his career brought to an end at the hands of The Dead Man and the streak. There is every reason to believe that he would want to come back and basically end the same thing that ended him.

If it's going to end to someone, why not a fellow legend like Triple H, who's been Shawn's best friend for much of the last two decades?

What makes this intriguing is that none of these scenarios takes a long, detailed explanation. The way that the storyline between the three men has progressed, any one of the scenarios is entirely possible right now. There's nothing hidden that would have to be revealed in any one of the three scenarios.

That is what will save this match. A rematch between the two might well be a fine bout, but there wouldn't be any doubt in it or reason to watch it.

What's in question is not who will win, that will be The Undertaker.

No, what we're questioning is how he'll win. For that, we have Shawn Michaels to thank. He is still stealing shows two years after retiring.
