Dear Everyone: Kentucky Could Only Beat the Bobcats

Ethan Sherwood StraussMay 31, 2018

Hey, I'm not some pro-NBA zealot who assumes that the worst NBA roster will always trump the best college roster. The key word is "always," because I believe that the Charlotte Bobcats are a uniquely terrible, notional NBA team that only exists to tank for picks. But other people are expanding the realm of possible Kentucky victims and I am not down with that.

First off, Charles Barkley:

"Nobody can beat (Kentucky). The Toronto Raptors can’t, the Bobcats maybe. But there’s nobody in this NCAA tournament that can beat this team."

Charles, give some (relative) credit to Toronto here. The Raps have a -4.0 point differential, meaning they average a four point loss per game. This is not exactly impressive, but it does mean that Toronto tends to at least be competitive in this league.

In contrast, the Bobcats have a rancid -13.1 point differential, the worst measure since the 1992'-1993' Mavericks (-15.2) embarrassed their city, the league and the world at large. Charlotte is currently on pace to finish with the second worst point differential in NBA history, which is only surprising if you avoid looking at their D-League-scented roster.

Yesterday, ex-Maryland coach Gary Williams mentioned the Wizards as a potential Wildcat victim. No, no and no. Washington may be terrible, but they come into that game with John Wall and Nene. Also, a -7.3 point differential is a far cry from the staggering Charlotte mark.

Look, I'm all for basking in the wonder of Anthony Davis and MKG. But let's pay Bobcat craptitude the respect it deserves. They and only they could lose to Kentucky. Get it right.
