Bill Parcells: New Orleans Saints Must Spare No Expense Landing Coaching Great

Sean Payton made it known Tuesday that he intended to talk to coaching-great Bill Parcells about the Saints head coaching position for the 2012 season, according to the Washington Post. The Saints must spare no expense to land the coaching great if they want to salvage the 2012 season.

With the recent train-wreck that has occurred in New Orleans around the bounty program, there is an assumed lack of discipline associated with the Saints. Now those same players have lost their head coach, a coach that is known for his relationship-based teaching style—something he learned from Parcells.

Payton spoke for 18 minutes at the NFL meetings according to the Washington Post, discussing why he thinks that Parcells is the right fit. Payton stated the obvious when discussing his former boss, saying “he’s a great teacher…he’s a Hall-of-Fame head coach.”

That may be the most obvious point, but likely the most overlooked in the scenario. A coach doesn’t earn the respect of former understudies and players alike like Parcells has without being a coach that can build belief in a system and win ball games.

The Saints have lost their leader and face of the program with the suspension of Sean Payton. They will need to replace that leadership with veteran players stepping up, but also by making the right choice for a replacement coach.

Bill Parcells may not be interested in stepping in for one season in New Orleans. After all, he is retired for a reason and has a great job in the television studio. But the itch never goes away for a coach or a player, and that may be enough to pull him back into the game to help out a former pupil.

The Saints will need a coach that could captivate the team and build a quick rapport without threatening their beloved suspended head coach’s position with the team. They also need a strong discipline-minded coach, with Parcells fitting the mold nicely.

It the Saints plan on making lemonade with the lemons they picked for themselves this offseason, they need to pull out the stops and land Bill Parcells.
