Matt Miller@nfldraftscoutNFL Draft Lead WriterMarch 27, 20122012 NFL Mock Draft: Matt Miller's 7-Round Predictions with Compensatory Picks
The NFL officially released its compensatory-pick determinations for the 2012 NFL draft on Monday, finalizing the 2012 NFL draft order.
As such, it only makes sense to plot out a fresh mock draft, factoring in these additional picks.
(Before reading, though, be sure to check out B/R NFL draft blogger Sigmund Bloom's recap and analysis of the NFL's compensatory pick awards!)
Where will enigmatic players such as LaMichael James land? Where will college ball favorites such as Kirk Cousins or Dont'a Hightower end up?
We'll break down our latest projections round by round.
Round 1
1. IND—Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Luck is the best quarterback prospect to come out since John Elway.
The Colts would be crazy to pass on their savior.
2. WAS (via STL)—Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
The Redskins made the right move trading up for RGIII. He has incredible upside and is worth the massive number of picks they gave up. He's a real-deal talent.
3. MIN—Matt Kalil, OT, Southern California
Kalil projects as a near-perfect franchise left tackle. He will be a staple on the Vikings offensive line and will benefit both the running and passing game.
4. CLE—Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
Claiborne will be a shutdown corner in the NFL. His value is far too high, and he's the safest pick here for the Browns.
5. TB—Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Richardson has all the potential to be the next best running back in the league. He's strong, exceptionally fast, agile, has great vision and is going to make this Buccaneers team very dangerous.
6. STL (via WAS)—Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
Drafting Blackmon has become a must for the Rams since losing Brandon Lloyd in free agency. They desperately need to give Sam Bradford a target to throw to. The team also loves his run-after-catch skills.
7. JAX—Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
Coples may be a risky pick here, but his upside is well worth it. If the Jaguars can coach him up, he has potential to be a great end in this league.
8. MIA—Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
Say what you will, but the Dolphins desperately need a quarterback. This may not be a popular pick, and it's a huge stretch, but Miami needs to take the shot.
9. CAR—Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
Brockers is an absolute beast, and he's going to thrive being coached by Ron Rivera. He has the intangibles to be a star.
10. BUF—Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
The Bills have a big need to fill at tackle, so this pick would make the most sense. Reiff is a former tight end and has elite athleticism for a tackle.
11. KC—David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
The Chiefs will round out a great offseason with this pick. DeCastro is the best guard to come out since Steve Hutchinson and will make this offensive line elite.
12. SEA—Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College
Kuechly is athletic, and he's got a nose for the ball. The Seahawks took care of offense in free agency, and this pick will take care of their need at middle linebacker.
13. ARZ—Nick Perry, OLB, Southern California
Perry is the highest-ranked defensive end on my board from a talent standpoint, and he's a steal here at 13, especially for a team desperate for talent on the edge.
14. DAL—Melvin Ingram, OLB, South Carolina
Dallas will be getting a speedy and athletic outside linebacker it can use to replace Anthony Spencer. He will put a ton of pressure on the quarterback.
15. PHI—Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
Poe is a dominant defensive lineman who can cause havoc all across the line. The Eagles desperately need the help, so they'll be happy to take him.
16. NYJ—Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
The Jets have so many needs to fill that they'll be wise to go with the best player available here. Floyd will be a very valuable weapon for Mark Sanchez—or Tim Tebow.
17. CIN (via OAK)—Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
Wright is a speedy wideout who's going to become very dangerous on this offense. He'll add a whole new element and really open things up for A.J. Green.
18. SD—Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina
Gilmore is the second-rated corner on my board. He may not be a big name, but he's a versatile and talented corner who can really help out this defense.
19. CHI—Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford
With Mike Tice taking over the offense, Fleener's athletic ability at the tight end position will be in demand. His 4.45 at the Stanford pro day woke up evaluators who had Fleener falling to the second or third round.
20. TEN—Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
Jeffery has incredible upside as a deep-threat receiver, and the Titans desperately need him as a weapon. This is a great pick for the Titans.
21. CIN—Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
The Bengals are going to eventually want to move Nate Clements to the nickel as he gets older, so drafting Kirkpatrick here makes that move a lot easier. Despite his character issues, his talent makes him worth the risk.
22. CLE (via ATL)—Lamar Miller, RB, Miami-FL
Browns fans may be mad about passing up on Richardson at No. 4, but taking Miller here will make up for that. He's got great speed and elusiveness, and he will be dangerous for this offense.
23. DET—Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia
The Lions have to upgrade their offensive line, and Glenn is a versatile and athletic player who can fill needs now and in the future.
24. PIT—Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
Upshaw is the real deal as an outside linebacker, and he fits this Pittsburgh team like a glove. There isn't a safer pick not named Andrew Luck in this draft.
25. DEN—Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State
The Broncos may consider taking a lineman here, but with none worth the value of this pick, they'll take Cox, who will make their already dangerous defense even better.
26. HOU—Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech
Hill's speed can make him elite on this offense. He'll be able to stretch the defense and help out both the running and passing game.
27. NE (via NO)—Andrew Branch, OLB, Clemson
A fast-rising prospect, Branch is a classic college defensive end who has a deadly first step to make the transition to outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense.
28. GB—Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois
Mercilus is a pass-rushing specialist who will fit in great as a 3-4 OLB across from Clay Matthews. His draft stock is soaring after leading the NCAA with 16 sacks in 2011.
29. BAL—Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama
The Ravens need to start thinking long-term at linebacker, and Hightower fits their system perfectly. He will thrive learning under Ray Lewis and company.
30. SF—Peter Konz, OG, Wisconsin
Konz is the No. 1-rated center, so he's a steal here for a 49ers team with a desperate need.
31. NE—Kendall Reyes, DE, Connecticut
The Patriots will move back to a 3-4 defense in 2012, and that means finding a big defensive end to stop the run. Reyes will likely team with Jonathan Fanene, whom the team picked up in free agency, to be the bookends of the defensive line.
32. NYG—Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Adams has incredible upside and intangibles as a lineman. The Giants will have to work on his footwork and fundamentals, but he's well worth the time.
Round 2
33. STL—Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
Martin is a very raw player with a ton of talent. The Rams will really fortify their offense in these first two rounds.
34. IND—Chris Polk, RB, Washington
Polk is a great fit here. Downhill, bruising runner that will be a dangerous weapon behind Luck.
35. MIN—Rueben Randle, WR, LSU
The Vikings need to give Christian Ponder a downfield weapon. Randle will suffice in Round 2.
36. TB—Mark Barron, SS, Alabama
Barron does have first-round talent, but his stock fell due to a sports hernia. He's a steal for this vastly improved Buccaneers team.
37. CLE—Brandon Weeden, QB, Oklahoma State
Weeden will be a good developmental pick at quarterback, especially if it turns out the Browns really don't believe in Colt McCoy as much as they say.
38. JAX—Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
Sanu is a great deep threat with explosive speed. The Jags need to help out Blaine Gabbert as much as they can.
39. STL (via WAS)—Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State
Worthy is a first-round talent. He's big and strong, and he has a knack for getting in the backfield.
40. CAR—Kelechi Osemele, OG, Iowa State
Osemele is a very big prospect with a lot of raw intangibles. The Panthers will have to coach him up, but he's a good pick.
41. BUF—Jamell Fleming, CB, Oklahoma
Fleming is a great pick and a steal for the Bills. He can really thrive playing behind their new and improved defensive line.
42. MIA—Harrison Smith, SS, Notre Dame
The Dolphins have to take a fundamentally sound pick after reaching for Tannehill in the top 10. Smith will help out their defense drastically.
43. SEA—Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse
Defense is a huge point of emphasis for the Seahawks. Their front seven is going to cause havoc in the NFC West.
44. KC—Mike Martin, DT, Michigan
Martin is a great pick here for the Chiefs. He's a tenacious defender with a constant motor. Should cause some havoc for opposing offenses.
45. DAL—Devon Still, DT, Penn State
Devon Still is a huge steal here for the Cowboys. They'll continue to build up their defensive line with this pick. He's been projected as a first-round guy many times, so they'll love him here.
46. PHI—Kirk Cousins, QB, Michigan State
Backup quarterback may be the most important position in Philadelphia. In Cousins, the Eagles will be getting an underrated quarterback with a great feel for the game. He's a leader if anything.
47. NYJ—Doug Martin, RB, Boise State
The Jets need a young and talented running back that they can develop. Martin will be the guy.
48. NE (via OAK)—Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
New England may get the steal of the draft in Jenkins. Despite his character concerns, he is a top-15 talent.
49. SD—Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall
Curry is a very talented player who can be a big factor coming off the end.
50. CHI—Kevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin
After the Bears pass on a lineman in Round 1, Zeitler becomes a must-have in Round 2.
51. PHI (via ARZ)—Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina
Brown has been up and down many boards, but there is no denying that he has raw talent. He'll really help this defense out.
52. TEN—Ben Jones, C, Georgia
The Titans will be getting a great value on a slightly underrated center here. He's a solid pick.
53. CIN—Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska
David isn't perfect, but he'll fit in nicely in a vastly improved secondary.
54. DET—Mitchell Schwartz, OT, California
Schwartz is a great development pick for the Lions. He'll be a starter for a long time once he cracks the lineup.
55. ATL—Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson
Tony Gonzalez is nearing the end of his career. Allen will learn a lot and eventually take his spot.
56. PIT—David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech
Wilson is a very good back who will thrive in this offense.
57. DEN—Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Denver needs to start thinking about life without Champ Bailey soon enough. Dennard is underrated and can become very good in time.
58. HOU—Jared Crick, DE, Nebraska
Crick is an exceptional pick here, as he fell because of injury concerns. He'll replace Antonio Smith gracefully. Update: A previous version said "Mario Williams" instead of Antonio Smith. Our apologies for the confusion.
59. NO—This pick is forfeited following the NFL's "Bountygate" punishments.
60. GB—Billy Winn, OLB, Boise State
The Packers need to continue fortifying their front seven, so Winn will be a great pickup.
61. BAL—Chris Givens, WR, Wake Forest
The Ravens need to give Joe Flacco a few more options at wideout. Givens will be an important pick.
62. SF—Casey Hayward, CB, Vanderbilt
Hayward is a great pick who will settle in nicely among this veteran defense.
63. NE—George Iloka, SS, Boise State
Defense is going to be the name of the game for the Patriots this draft, as it should be. That secondary was awful last season.
64. NYG—Bobby Wagner, OLB, Utah State
Wagner has a chance to really thrive behind this dominant Giants defensive line.
Round 3
65. IND—Marvin Jones, WR, California
The Colts need young wideouts who can grow with Andrew Luck, so this is a great pick.
66. STL—Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincinnati
Pead is a shifty runner with a ton of upside. He'll be a good change-of-pace back for this team.
67. MIN—Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia
The Vikings need to start retooling a once great defense. Boykin can grow into a good corner.
68. CLE—Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
The more offensive weapons the better for the Browns. They need to give Colt McCoy everything he needs to succeed.
69. TB—Trumaine Johnson, CB, Montana
The Buccaneers will continue working on defense in Round 3. Great pickup here.
70. WAS—James-Michael Johnson, ILB, Nevada
After all the offensive moves the 'Skins have made so far, this will be a much-needed pickup for their defense.
71. JAX—Markelle Martin, FS, Oklahoma State
Martin will be a good developmental pick for the Jags and could make an impact right away.
72. BUF—Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State
Buffalo continues improving its team on both sides of the ball. This is a good offensive pickup.
73. MIA—Zebrie Sanders, OT, Florida State
The Dolphins need to protect their new quarterback, so Sanders makes a lot of sense here in Round 3.
74. MIA (via CHI, CAR)—Orson Charles, TE, Georgia
Charles really impressed at the combine. He's got great speed and can become a very dangerous option on this offense.
75. KC—Mychal Kendricks, ILB, California
Solid pickup here for the Chiefs. They haven't made any sexy picks, but solid all around.
76. SEA—Bobby Massie, OT, Mississippi
I'll never bash a team for taking a tackle in Round 3, especially since they just invested in a quarterback.
77. HOU (via PHI)—Josh Chapman, DT, Alabama
Chapman is a huge player that takes up a ton of space on the defensive line. He can be a huge steal if he lives up to his potential.
78. NYJ—Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma
Lewis could be a very valuable pick for this defensive-minded team.
79. OAK—This pick is forfeited due to the Raiders' selection of Terrelle Pryor in the 2011 NFL supplemental draft.
80. SD—LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
James is a great change-of-pace back and could even help out on special teams. The Chargers will take him with Darren Sproles in mind.
81. CHI—Sean Spence, OLB, Miami-FL
The Bears linebackers are getting older. Spence is a solid backup that can develop into more.
82. ARZ—Brandon Washington, OG, Miami-FL
The Cardinals need as much help as they can get on the offensive line.
83. DAL—Amini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern State
Offensive line is a big need for the 'Boys. They'll have to address it here.
84. TEN—Cam Johnson, DE, Virginia
The Titans need to continue working on their defensive front. Great pick here.
85. CIN—James Brown, OG, Troy
Solid pickup here for the Bengals, who have had a great draft so far.
86. ATL—Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise State
The Falcons re-signed John Abraham and Kroy Biermann, but they have a need for a young pass-rusher who can ignite the defense.
87. DET—Dwight Bentley, CB, Louisiana-Lafayette
Detroit lost its best corner Eric Wright in free agency, and while the Lions have young talents in the arsenal, they need to add more depth.
88. PIT—Joe Adams, WR, Arkansas
Mike Wallace's future with the team is still in question. Should the Steelers lose him this offseason or next, Adams is an ideal replacement.
89. DEN—Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State
No more Tim Tebow or Brady Quinn means the Broncos need to find a backup. Osweiler could become a steal, learning behind Peyton Manning.
90. PHI (via HOU)—Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech
As the Eagles try to move Asante Samuel in a trade, Hosley would step in to replace him in the depth chart behind Nnamdi Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Joselio Hanson.
91. NO—Josh Kaddu, OLB, Oregon
With their first pick in the draft, the Saints select an outside linebacker who can bring speed to the position—something they lack at this time.
92. GB—Bernard Pierce, RB, Temple
The Packers haven't moved to re-sign Ryan Grant, which opens up a spot in their running back rotation. Pierce has the power and patience to be effective in a zone blocking scheme.
93. BAL—Shea McClellin, OLB, Boise State
Jarret Johnson left for San Diego, leaving Paul Kruger and Sergio Kindle at outside linebacker. McClellin has the body type to line up immediately as a strong-side linebacker.
94. SF—Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington
Alameda Ta'amu may not be ready to start as a nose tackle yet, but he has the massive size to become a factor at the zero technique position in the 49ers' 3-4 defense.
95. NE—Bruce Irvin, OLB, West Virginia
Just like their first pick in the draft, the Patriots are trying to add speedy pass-rushers. Irvin's 4.4 speed will give Bill Belichick a valuable edge-rusher.
96. NYG—Robert Turbin, RB, Utah State
Bye bye, Brandon Jacobs. Hello Robert Turbin. The Giants find their complementary back to pair with Ahmad Bradshaw.
97. OAK—Josh Robinson, CB, UCF
Al Davis loved speed, but Reggie McKenzie loves playmaking ability. Robinson has both.
Round 4
98. STL—Ronnie Hillman, RB, San Diego State
99. IND—Brandon Thompson, NT, Clemson
100. MIN—Keenan Robinson, OLB, Texas
