NFL News: Is Derek Anderson Worth It?

According to The Columbus Dispatch, the Cleveland Browns have offered restriced free agent Derek Anderson a 3-year contract worth up to $20 million. My question: why?

1) Cleveland is on the verge of being a great football team, albeit tough to believe. Signing Anderson is going to do nothing except cause controversy amongst the team in the future. Anderson or Quinn? This will be the question asked for the longest time and if one messes up, it'll automatically turn into quarterback controversy. 

2)  The Browns have no first round pick. To the best of my knowledge, if the Browns trade Anderson since he's a RFA, the team taking him will have to give up their 1st round pick. Who's to say a team would not be willing to do this? There is a VERY high interest in him (obviously by the contract the Browns are trying to offer) and having a first round pick to help shore up the aging defensive line would be a solid investment.

 3) Why keep him? Quinn is on the bench and he looked good when on the field. Good arm, good accuracy, smart decisions, and he looked way too poised to be a player who's barely seen any playing time.  He was in a pro-style offense on some underacheiving teams at Notre Dame and turned them into offensive forces.  He deserves a shot at the starting position.  Besides, why lobby for a guy in Anderson who turned the ball over 21 times last season w/ only 32 scores?  That's not very good at all and surely not worth $20 million. His 56.5 completion percentage is also something that isn't very impressive. Want more? Anderson also had eight games with a QB Rating of less than 80.0.  His end-of-season QB Rating was slightly above 80.0 but let's look at how he achieved that: a QB Rating of 142.5 against Miami, 121.0 against Cincinnatti, and 96.5 against Houston.  

Get rid of him Cleveland.  It's the best thing for the franchise. You need help on your DL and some young, talented guys wouldn't hurt. Keeping Anderson will.
