The New Orleans Saints are hoping to remain a competitive team in 2012-13, despite the fact that head coach Sean Payton will be suspended for the year.

This is exactly why he and general manager Mickey Loomis are preparing to meet with Bill Parcells today, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

If they can land the future Hall of Famer as an interim coach for a year, the Saints would be in position to remain right in the thick of the Super Bowl hunt.

However, Payton and Loomis are going to be hard pressed to convince The Big Tuna to return to the field after an extended absence for a number of reasons.

Parcells is now 70 years old and enjoying a pseudo-retirement, working occasionally as an analyst for ESPN. He hasn’t been on the sideline since the 2006 season with the Dallas Cowboys, when he abruptly retired in the offseason following Tony Romo’s botched hold in the playoffs.

The two-time Super Bowl winner also hasn’t been involved with an NFL franchise since he left his Exec. VP of Football Operations post with the Dolphins in October of 2010.

Another factor in Parcell’s decision could be that signing with New Orleans would reportedly delay his eligibility to enter Canton by another five years from the date of his next retirement.

In Peter King’s latest Sports Illustrated column, he spent some time catching up with the former Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys coach.

It didn’t seem like he was too interested in leaving the cozy retired life.

I asked Parcells if he had the bug to return to coaching.

"Do I have the bug?'' he said, then paused. "I don't think so.''

New Orleans would love to have Parcells return to the field for one more season before permanently retiring, but they likely would have to make a “Godfather offer” that the Big Tuna simply could not refuse to convince him.

Keep it tuned to B/R throughout the day to get the latest news on the Saints' pitch to Parcells to become the interim coach.
