Bill Parcells and Saints: Consulting Job Makes More Sense Than Coaching

Coaching legend Bill Parcells going to the New Orleans Saints makes a lot of sense. Just not in the coaching position that he had reportedly discussed with soon-to-be suspended Saints coach Sean Payton.

While seeking the counsel of his former boss and mentor, Bill Parcells, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has broached the idea of Parcells becoming the interim head coach during Payton's suspension for the 2012 season, according to several league sources.

While this news comes out of the blue, it is not shocking. Payton used to work on Parcells' staff with the Cowboys, and the two have maintained communication since. 

However, it is not Payton's job that Parcells should fill. Instead, he should come on as a consultant and help guide this team as Saints GM Mickey Loomis serves his eight-game suspension.

This is role is better suited for Parcells at this point in his life. Parcells highlights this himself. Sports Illustrated's Peter King shared from Parcells. King:

I asked Parcells if he had the bug to return to coaching.

"Do I have the bug?'' he said, then paused. "I don't think so.''

Parcells has not coached since the 2006 season. It would be a huge undertaking to take on someone else's team for one season. He would have to learn someone else's players and use the system that is already in place. That would require all of his fire, intensity and energy. And that is something he does not sound prepared to give. 

A consultant job is another thing entirely. Parcells would have to learn the roster, but he would be able to do that in a much more relaxed setting than that of head coach. 

His guidance for the Saints would be invaluable. They could use someone with that experience as Loomis serves his suspension.
