Fantasy Baseball Sleepers 2012: Jeremy Guthrie and SPs Who Will Impress

Gabe ZaldivarMar 27, 2012

It's time to break down the arms that will get your fantasy team through a marathon season. Starting pitching is one area that you simply can't skimp on, and these are the guys that will help carry the burden.

Whether you are looking for strikeouts, wins or a consistent WHIP, there is a huge drop-off when the marquee names fly off the draft board.

That is when the cunning of an experienced manager will bring out the sleepers. Here are the arms that will get you from middle of the road season to unforgettable finish.

Jeremy Guthrie

It's time to ride the Guthrie train for one more solid year. He will be the opening day starter for the Rockies and a seasoned vet that can control his pitches and skirt the dangers of Coors Field.

Guthrie is known for his ability to make it through the season and eat a load of innings. What he has shown this far in spring is that he is ready to make good on his new digs and impress the crowd in Denver.

Through three spring training starts, Guthrie has posted a 2.31 ERA. It's time to give man a chance in deep leagues.

Justin Masterson

Many feel a spike coming in his WHIP and ERA after posting a great season in 2011, wherein Masterson had 12 wins, a 3.21 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.

The fact is the righty induces ground balls and rarely hurts himself, forcing batters to contend with his unorthodox mechanics and his exact control.

I see nothing but upside and a real find if you are counting quality starts in your league.

Scott Baker

If you need a late-round pitcher to target, there is hardly better than Scott Baker, who is coming off a year wherein he battled arm issues.

That is all behind him and he should get better as the season progresses, inching toward the form he showed just prior to going down with injury.

His strikeout rate and walk ratio were all a shade better than they had been. I am banking on his return to form by the time the season starts.
