Women's Tournament 2012 Bracket: Brittney Griner Will Power Baylor to Title

Ryan RudnanskyJun 3, 2018

If you haven't figured it out by now, Brittney Griner is unstoppable.

The 6'8" junior is averaging 23.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.1 blocks this season for the Baylor Bears.

And as the Bears take on No. 2 seed Tennessee tonight in the Elite Eight, Griner will once again be the central figure.

Beyond being skilled on the hardwood, Griner is simply physically imposing. Her hands are nine inches long and 9.5 inches wide, according to ESPN's Sports Science. She has a wingspan of 7 feet 3.5 inches. To put that in perspective, she has bigger hands than LeBron James and a greater reach than Andrew Bynum.

That's why the women's field hasn't been able to stop Griner this whole tournament. That's also why Baylor has won its first three games of the women's NCAA tournament by an average of 25 points.

Griner isn't slowing down, either. She posted 35 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks against Georgia Tech in the Sweet 16. She went 13-of-18 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.

In short, Baylor having Griner in this year's NCAA tournament is comparable to the Los Angeles Lakers having Shaquille O'Neal back in his prime. In fact, Griner may be more dominant compared to her competition than O'Neal ever was.

That's why the only way to slow the Bears down this year is to get Griner in foul trouble. She can't be stopped. She can't be contained. The only way she doesn't make a huge impact in the game is if she's actually physically off the court.

But good luck getting Griner in foul trouble. After all, she's averaged 5.1 blocks this season. You simply don't drive at her and hope to draw a foul. You do that and you'll likely see your shot swatted back where it came from.

It leaves the rest of the field hopeless. Baylor may be more of sure thing this year than Kentucky is in the men's tournament.
