Tim Tebow Press Conference: Giants' John Mara Wise to Fuel Rivalry with Jets

Timothy RappMar 26, 2012

The saying in New York these days is that the Jets win the offseason and the Giants win the postseason.

Even Giants owner John Mara is buying into that notion, however tongue-in-cheek he may be doing so. And not only is it good for the inner-city rivalry, it's never bad to take a little dig at the opposition.

"

While meeting with reporters at the NFL meetings in Palm Beach, Mara was asked by reporters if New York is big enough for the Giants and Tebowmania.

"I don't know, but the David Carr press conference will be tomorrow, too," Mara joked to reporters according to tweet by ESPN's Rachel Nichols.

The Giants signed their backup quarterback Carr shortly after Tebow was traded to the Jets. Of course, unlike Tebow, who will be welcomed with a press conference by the Jets on Monday, Carr's signing was announced on a story by the Giants' team website.

"

The joke was harmless enough, but the implication is nonetheless sharp when looked at carefully—the Jets would have a press conference for a back-up quarterback. That's how the circus over there works. Here, we just handle our everyday business and win Super Bowls.

OK, so I'm probably reading a bit too much into the one-sentence quote with the above paragraph. After all, following this past season, Tim Tebow would be demanded for a press conference no matter where he signed.

But that's sort of the point, too. The Jets willingly brought the circus to town. The Giants quietly signed Carr and announced it on the team website.

In the battle for New York, and more importantly, the battle for the loyalties of New York's citizens, reminding people of what each team represents is important. Something as simple as a joke can serve as a reminder that the Giants win and the Jets hold press conferences for back-up quarterbacks.

Go ahead, New Yorkers—pick your side. John Mara certainly feels comfortable with what he's selling.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets have won a lot since 2009.
