10 Most Breathtaking 'Tweener' Videos in Tennis History

Jeff CohnJun 7, 2018

There is no question that fans are constantly dying to see the infamous 'Tweener'.

A tweener, or simply the nickname for hitting a shot between the legs (typically while running away from the net due to a well-placed lob from the opponent), is one of the most difficult shots in tennis—especially to hit a clean winner.

Roger Federer is often seen as the one who makes it on the highlight reels because of his ability to hit them and still win the point routinely, but others have shown versatility with the shot as well.

Here are the top 10 most exhilarating between-the-legs shots we have seen.

Note: Due to complications with video clips and an inability to recover old segments, most of the slides are relatively recent.

10. Roger Shows Andy That He Just Can't Do It Correctly

1 of 10

Through their lengthy rivalry and all of their matches, Andy Roddick still cannot hit the tweener like Roger can.

9. An Interesting Drill

2 of 10

Hitting only tweeners and lob volleys, these two players truly got a workout.

8. And the Crowd Goes Wild!

3 of 10

James Blake, known for his skill in hitting lob tweeners, got the Davis Cup crowd on their feet with this winner.

7. Rafa Ends the Point in Style

4 of 10

This is the type of point people usually have to play against Rafa in order to win.

Here, the roles have been reversed and Rafa is struggling to hit the ball through Novak Djokovic.

If he has to come up with shots like this all the time in order to beat Novak, do not count on him earning too many victories.

6. Feds Improvises Like No Other

5 of 10

Roger is known to have good volleys, but this is just indescribably good!

5. Bob Bryan Displays His Finesse

6 of 10

He had to fall over in order to hit this shot but it was perhaps well worth it.

4. Gonzo Hits a Non-Forehand Winner!

7 of 10

Fernando Gonzalez will sincerely be missed in the sport. He could come up with shots like this that no other player is talented enough to execute.

3. Federer Hits the Tweener as a Ground Stroke

8 of 10

He was quick to react to the ball clipping the net and changing directions, but it is doubtful that other players would think of striking the ball the same way from the baseline.

2. Feds Outdoes Himself

9 of 10

In back-to-back US Opens, Federer hit a tweener for a clean winner from behind the baseline.

This shot was probably the tougher shot to execute and required more skill but the one from the year prior helped Roger reach the final, which is more meaningful.

1. The Best Shot of His Life

10 of 10

He was relatively pleased about this shot, to say the least.

It earned him triple match point against one of the best players in the world to move into the final of the Major in Flushing Meadows.

It was struck incredibly hard and precisely, and Roger must have jumped higher than anybody else watching it.
