New York Jets: What We Learned from Tim Tebow's Press Conference

Gabriel WeintraubJun 6, 2018

By now you all know the story.

The Colts will presumably select Stanford star Andrew Luck with their first pick in the draft and consequently released the legendary Peyton Manning. The future Hall of Famer recently signed with the Broncos meaning they no longer had a spot for Tim Tebow

One team that did have a spot for Tebow: the New York Jets

One of the most famous athletes on the planet will now play under the biggest spotlight, in the biggest city while facing the most media pressure.

A press conference was held for Tebow on Monday just days after a giant billboard with his face was hung outside the Lincoln Tunnel.

You know, just like every other backup quarterback.

When Giants owner John Mara was asked if New York was big enough for the Giants and Tebow, he comically replied, “I don’t know, but the David Carr press conference will be tomorrow, too,” according to ESPN’s Rachel Nichols

But maybe this press conference wasn't unnecessary, as much was revealed and many questions were answered.

First of all, there’s no question that Tebow hardly feels the pressure of the media. He rarely hesitated and always seemed to have the right answers whether it was regarding his relationship with the Broncos, Jets, Mark Sanchez or Jesus Christ.

Though, as reluctant as he was to admit the fact, it was quite evident that Tebow plans to take over as the team’s starting quarterback.

Tebow was asked many questions about Sanchez and rarely gave a nod to his talents on the field as opposed to off the field.

Tebow frequently referred to the constant texting conversations, interviews and “fun” that the two have shared in the three years they've known each other. He referenced the respect and integrity with which Sanchez holds himself, referred to him as a “classy person” and looked forward to the "fun they will have together in the quarterback room.”

Although, the only football-related compliment he gave Sanchez was the fact that he has won many football games.

Later, when he was asked about what strengths he sees in the Jets, Tebow spoke highly of their “great defense,” “great offensive line” and “great skilled players.”

Throughout the press conference Tebow also frequently acknowledged the emphatic, passionate New York fans and his great relationships with Coaches Ryan and Sparano as well as General Manager Mike Tannenbaum and owner Woody Johnson.

One football aspect that Tebow forgot to mention: Mark Sanchez.

Tebow claimed to view himself as a football player before a quarterback and said he wants to help this football team win games anyway he can.

Though, if there’s one thing we learned from this press conference it’s that Tebow’s going to do whatever it takes to become the starting quarterback of the New York Jets.

Tebow said that he always plays better when there’s more on the line. Right now, there’s a whole lot on the line.
