A lot of people have been wondering what the New Orleans Saints will do about their coaching vacancies in the wake of "Bountygate."

How does Bill Parcells sound?

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported on Monday, via Adam Schefter:

"

As @morteport is reporting, Sean Payton has approached Bill Parcells about coaching the Saints this season.

Parcells won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants back in 1987 and 1991, but he hasn't coached since he was with the Dallas Cowboys from 2003 to 2006. He went to the playoffs with the Cowboys twice but lost in the Wild Card Round both times.

It makes sense that Payton would contact Parcells. He worked under Parcells with the Cowboys from 2003 to 2005. They have a close relationship, as do many of the coaches who thrived after learning under Parcells.

It appears at the moment Payton is just throwing it out there. You may as well see if Parcells would be interested and if not, move on from there. Although Parcells hasn't coached for a while, he was the vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins from 2008 to 2010. It's not like he's been out of the league since 2006.

I also like Parcells as a short-term option. He has the fire to spark a team and get it out of a rut. For a Saints team that is facing numerous fines and suspensions, they are in need of someone who can motivate and provide some energy and discipline.

The Saints still have the talent to win the NFC South. They finished 13-3 last season while winning the division title and made it to the NFC Divisional Round before falling to the upstart San Francisco 49ers.

Someone like Parcells would bring experience right away. There would at least not be a huge drop-off in the quality of the head coach.

It's worth a shot for a franchise that has seen better days.
