College Football Recruiting 2013: Tyrone Swoopes Highlights Top Camp Performers

Wes ODonnellJun 2, 2018

While the Northeast was rather quiet on college football recruiting scene this weekend, the South, West and Southwest were quite busy.

A number of the nation's top recruits came out in force, and more than a few shined at the Nike Football Training Camp in Dallas, New Level 7-on-7 in Las Vegas and IMG 7-on-7 in Bradenton, Florida.

The best and most exciting part of the weekend was that the best had a chance to compete against the best—that doesn't happen every week.

So in the battle of the best of the best, who was the best?

Tyrone Swoopes, QB, Whitewright (TX) WhitewrightCommitted to Texas (Nike Dallas, Elite 11)

Mack Brown's hopeful Vince Young clone was down in Dallas this weekend and dominated on both Saturday and Sunday. He was named MVP of the quarterbacks in the Regional Elite 11 before being awarded a golden ticket to the national Elite 11 camp this summer in California.

The Rivals 5-star recruit has a unique combination of size (6'4", 220 pounds), speed and athleticism that Longhorn Nation hopes turns into the production VY used to have in Austin.

His performance in Dallas was hardly a surprise, and the most important part of his performance this weekend is that we'll get to see him again this summer when he battles with the rest of the top QBs in the country.

Su'a Cravens, DB, Murrieta (CA) Vista MurrietaUndecided (New Level Vegas 7-on-7)

Out West, Rivals 5-star recruit Su'a Cravens was the top-ranked player in Vegas and backed it up on the field with an impressive performance.

Cravens, like Swoopes, has a great combination of size (6'1", 205 pounds), speed and athleticism for his position and is a gifted playmaker around the football.

He holds offers from nearly every major program in the nation is expected to be an impact player the minute he steps on campus.

Tahaan Goodman, DB, Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Rancho CucamongaUndecided (New Level Vegas 7-on-7)

One player actually out-shined Cravens in Vegas and that was Rivals 4-star defensive back Tahaan Goodman. The Rancho Cucamonga safety dominated the competition and was even forced to hold back a bit considering there was no hitting allowed.

At 6'2", 185 pounds, Goodman is a big-bodied defensive playmaker who plays with rare physicality and athleticism.

Though 7-on-7's aren't the best opportunity for him to showcase his skills, for him to stand out among the competition this way is a huge a boost for him.

He has a number of offers, but Alabama, USC, Michigan and Miami are visibly absent—that could change with another performance like this weekend.

Torrodney Prevot, DE, Houston (TX) Alief TaylorUndecided (Nike Dallas)

Named defensive lineman MVP in Dallas, Prevot outshone other big-name players like Daeshon Hall and Vincent Taylor this weekend.

Currently holding only a 3-star ranking from Rivals, the 6'4", 225-pounder's performance will do wonders for his stock across the country.

He already has offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Oklahoma, LSU and Texas, but could add many more the way he played.

Jake Oliver, WR, Dallas (TX) JesuitCommitted to Texas (Nike Dallas)

A well-known Longhorn commit, Oliver shined in Dallas and earned himself an invitation to the highly prestigious Nike camp this summer known as "The Opening."

At 6'4", 195 pounds, Oliver's size and overall skill set made him an easy target for the in-state Longhorns, and the Rivals 4-star recruit committed last February.

He wasn't the only one to earn an invitation to The Opening and he'll be followed to Beaverton, Oregon in July by Maurice Smith of Sugar Land (TX) Dulles and Mike Mitchell of Plano (TX) Prestonwood.

Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Tampa (FL) WhartonUndecided (IMG 7-on-7)

While Su'a Cravens was showing off in Vegas, Vernon Hargreaves III made a case for potentially being the best defensive back in the country down in Florida.

The son of a USF coach, Hargreaves III is a highly-coveted recruit with nearly every major program in the country chasing.

Unlike most of the others on this list, the Rivals 5-star recruit isn't a physical freak with great size (he's 5'10", 180 pounds), but he's an elite cover corner with playmaking skills and top-notch instincts.

The battle for his signature has only just begun.

Akeem Jones, QB, Opa Locka (FL) Miami Carol City SeniorUndecided (IMG 7-on-7)

Another superstar down in Florida this week was a relatively unknown QB from Miami Gardens. The 6'2", 180-pound dual-threat weapon was named the MVP of the weekend and, as 247 reported, was a leader both on and off the field.

He has interest from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Rutgers, Florida State and Miami, among others, but should certainly earn some offers sooner than later.

Ra'Shaad Samples, WR, Skyline (TX) SkylineUndecided (Nike Dallas)

In a bit of sad news, highly-touted wide receiver Ra'Shaad Samples went down with an injury in Dallas.

The rising senior prospect is one of the most-wanted recruits in the country with offers stretching from coast-to-coast.

ESPN quotes his father as saying:

"

"It looks like it's a severe ankle injury," said Reginald Samples, Ra'Shaad's father and the coach of the Skyline football team. "We'll know more on Monday or Tuesday. Everything is shut down for now, so we didn't get a chance for a full evaluation. He's got a plastic cast on for now. He's wearing a little wrap and some cloth on it. We will go in Monday and see what the doctors say."

"

He's a gifted athlete with elite potential at 6', 180 pounds and even an injury of this magnitude won't completely shutdown the increasing demand for his services.

This was one of the busier weekends in the recruiting world, but it is far from the last. This coming weekend there will be a Nike Football Training Camp and Junior Rank camp in Los Angeles, a pair of Rivals/VTO Junior Days in South Carolina and North Carolina and an NUC 5-Star Showcase in New Jersey.
