2012 NFL Draft Projections: Where Ryan Lindley and Dark-Horse QBs Will Land

Zach KruseJun 2, 2018

San Diego State quarterback and 2012 NFL draft prospect Ryan Lindley went through his pro day workout Sunday, and, according to one former NFL personnel man, the 6'4" quarterback "put on a show."

NFL.com's Gil Brandt, who spent almost 30 years in the Dallas Cowboys' front office and has continued working in the draft business as an analyst, said Lindley completed 67 of 73 passes Sunday despite not throwing to any of his receivers from the 2011 season. He appeared to be "very smart" with "good arm strength."

Overall, Brandt listed Lindley as a likely fourth-round pick in April's draft.

Others, including Wes Bunting at National Football Post, have Lindley further down the board.

"

Lindley is certainly worth a draft pick and has the skill set to go somewhere in the early/mid round range, depending on how well he performs the rest of the year/post-season. However, if he doesn't improve his overall footwork/coordination from the pocket, it's going to be tough for him to make plays in the NFL when he doesn't have a clean pocket.

"

After throwing for 3,850 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2010, Lindley struggled at times last season and finished with just 3,153 yards and 23 scores with a 53.7 completion percentage. In four years, Lindley threw 47 interceptions.

Brandt may have slightly over-reacted to Lindley's impressive pro day, and it's probably a safer bet to consider him a late round pick in April's draft. As a developmental prospect, Lindley is worth a look between the fifth and seventh rounds.

The following are some other dark-horse quarterback prospects to watch in the later rounds.

B.J. Coleman, Tennessee-Chatanooga

Transferred out of Tennessee after Lane Kiffin left, but he's got a lot of upside for a team that can sit back and develop a No. 3 quarterback.

Aaron Corp, Richmond

Corp had some bad luck at USC, beating out Matt Barkley early on but suffering an injury that knocked him off the top of the depth chart. Transferred to Richmond and now looks like another developmental player at the next level.

Brock Osweiler, Arizona State

A mammoth quarterback at 6'8", Osweiler shows surprising athleticism and mobility. Still raw as a passer, he'll need time to have a crack at starting in the NFL. Late-round prospect with big upside.
