2012 NFL Draft News: Sleeper CB Donnie Fletcher Fast at Boston College's Pro Day
Boston College's defense is giving the 2012 NFL draft one of its truly elite prospects, but another overlooked prospect left his mark on the minds of the NFL personnel in attendance last week in Chestnut Hill.
CBS Sports Rob Rang reports that 27 teams were in attendance, and NESN's Jeff Howe passes along that one of those teams, the Philadelphia Eagles, had their LB coach, Mike Caldwell, run the drills for sure-fire first-round LB Luke Kuechly. That is interesting because many are taking Kuechly out of consideration for the No. 15 pick after the Eagles traded for former Houston Texans LB Demeco Ryans.
Kuechly stood on his outstanding combine numbers, but his LB workout focused on "pass drops, footwork and reading and reacting," according to Howe.
Kuechly explained:
""I haven't done a whole lot of man coverage, so I can't tell people I'm off the charts with it," Kuechly said. "It's a lot of technique work. We worked on it a little bit down in Florida, just kind of different techniques, but I think it's a lot of technique work and something I've just got to pick up on the fly."
"
According to Howe, Kuechly also passed along that he has a visit coming up with Carolina, who hold the No 9 overall pick.
CB Donnie Fletcher was passed over by the combine, but he showed that he probably won't be passed over in the draft at his pro day. Fletcher already has a formidable 6'1" 195 frame, and when you add the 4.38-4.44 40 times that Rang reported, all of a sudden, Fletcher becomes an excellent sleeper. As Rang points out, we should expect Fletcher to be one of the first non-combine invites to be drafted next month.
