2012 NFL Draft: Dontari Poe and Defensive Studs Who Will Shine Right Away
With the NFL's shift to a more offensive-minded game, dominant defensive players are at a premium right now. Teams have to find special talents in the draft in order to keep up with what teams like New England, Green Bay, New Orleans and others have done in recent years.
The good news is, this year's draft is loaded with dominant defenders who are going to make an immediate impact for their new teams.
Here are the defensive studs that will shine in the NFL the second they step on the field for their first preseason game.
Dontari Poe, Defensive Tackle
In a draft that is loaded with talent on the defensive line, Poe stands out as the one with the most potential. Not only does he have blazing speed for a 341-pound human being, but he understands how to play in the middle of the line.
Most defensive tackles want to get sacks because it helps their bottom line. Poe excels because he knows that plugging the middle to stop the run is just as important, if not more so, than making sure he gets to the quarterback.
The good news is, Poe won't have to worry about handling the quarterback. He will work his way into a starting lineup right away, and show the world why he is part of the new breed at defensive tackle.
Luke Kuechly, Linebacker
In recent years, there has been a dearth of elite-level linebackers in the draft. Kuechly is going to help buck that trend in 2012.
Adjectives have been thrown around to describe him like leader and instinctual, but that really dismisses just how good Kuechly really is.
In addition to his ability to motivate his teammates, Kuechly is a great athlete who can change a defense. He reads quarterbacks and running backs as well as any defensive player in this class.
There was a time when he was thought to be a mid-first round pick, but now he could sneak into the top 10, depending on team needs.
Janoris Jenkins, Cornerback
One of the most controversial players in this draft, Jenkins is also one of it's most talented. He is not that far behind Morris Claiborne, the top defensive player, based on pure coverage ability.
The biggest drawback to Jenkins are his off-field transgressions. He has done all he can to convince teams he is a changed man, and his stock seems to be climbing.
As long as he stays clean, Jenkins is going to make an immediate impact for whatever team lands him. He will also bring great value because his problems are going to keep him from going in the top 10.
