Correcting the 5 Biggest Misconceptions About the Dallas Cowboys

Jason HenryJun 5, 2018

How many fallacies can one franchise have?

The Dallas Cowboys are like your sister’s boyfriend misunderstood. Listen to fans across the league and the Cowboys are one of the league’s most hated teams. That's simply not true.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Cowboys are, by far, the NFL’s most popular team. In fact, the Journal states that the league’s second-most popular team is a full 23 percent back of Dallas.

How bout them Cowboys!?

The New York Jets made headlines by trading for Tim Tebow, and the Saints made the news for losing their head coach for an entire season. But Dallas hasn’t done much this offseason and still remain as one of the NFL’s most talked about franchises.

But with talk comes misconception. The Cowboys hold their fair share of them with many being incorrect.

Let’s take a look at five of the biggest misconceptions about the Dallas Cowboys.

Jerry Jones Doesn’t Know How to Draft

1 of 5

Not the most eloquent title, but it is a common misconception. Here are just a few of the players Jones has drafted over the past four years.

He took tackle Tyron Smith last season, receiver Dez Bryant in 2010, tight end John Phillips in the sixth round of 2009 and Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins in 2008. There's DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff in 2005 and Terence Newman and Bradie James in 2003.

All are players who have contributed to the team's success as of late, which disproves the theory that Jones has no handle on his duties as a general manager.

Tony Romo Is a Choker

2 of 5

Romo threw a costly interception against the Jets that led to the team’s demise against New York last season, and he tossed three picks to the Lions, which cost Dallas a victory.

But Romo is no choker. Hall of Fame member and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman recently said that Romo is far better a quarterback than Aikman.

"

He has a good team around him," Aikman said. "Hopefully—and I believe this will happen—I believe that he will win a Super Bowl before he is done playing.

"

While Tony has made his fair share of mistakes, it’s not because of nerves or his inability to play the position. It's being too risky and a little over confident.

He is one of the league’s premier passers, just check his stats, and once the Cowboys finally come together as a team, he’ll have all the tools needed to lead Dallas to a Super Bowl.

Mike Jenkins Is a Bad Cornerback

3 of 5

Mike Jenkins is often injured but not a bad cornerback. According to a report on ESPNDallas.com, Bryan Broaddus, a former NFL scout, believes that Jenkins was the team’s lone bright spot in the defensive backfield.

"

Other than Jenkins, the cornerbacks were awful and it didn't matter who the Cowboys put in the mix. It's time for Newman and Ball to move on.

"

If Jenkins is healthy, he’ll continue to flourish in defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s system.

Jerry Jones Is a Bad General Manager

4 of 5

I have said, sometimes often, that Jerry needs to relinquish his duties as general manger of the Cowboys. Many will point to the Cowboys' inability to win more than one playoff game since 1996 and the overall failure of the team to reach the Super Bowl.

But we cannot fault Jerry for trying. So far, the Cowboys have signed the most free agents in team history. At the end of the day, that means nothing if the Cowboys can’t make any noise this season.

However, Jones is trying to improve his team, and we simply cannot burden him with that misconception.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders

5 of 5

One of the largest fallacies out regarding the Cowboys is their cheerleaders. Many believe that the Cowboys were the first team in NFL history to have a cheer squad.

Not true.

The league’s first cheerleading squad belonged to the Baltimore Colts. The ‘Boys were the first team to hire these ladies as professionals, but Baltimore has the title of first.
