Tim Tebow to Jets: Crybaby Teammates Have Only Themselves to Blame for Trade

Mike MoraitisJun 7, 2018

Boo hoo! That's all we seem to be hearing from the New York Jets in reaction to the trade that brought Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos to the greatest city in the world.

Or at least across the river from it on Sundays and Monday nights.

So do the players really have a right to complain about the Jets' newest acquisition?

No.

In 2011, the Jets were off to a great start and were certainly the best team in New York at one point during the season record-wise. At Week 14, New York was 8-5 and coming off two big wins—and by big, I mean of the blowout variety.

To make the picture look better than it already was, only two wins out of the playoffs, the Jets had to do it against the likes of three struggling teams—the disappointing Philadelphia Eagles, the inconsistent New York Giants and the woeful Miami Dolphins.

And then all of a sudden, it was gone. The team that looked so strong weeks before got spanked 45-19 by the Eagles on national television.

But that was okay, because they were about to take on the Giants, who were in the process of hemorrhaging their way out of the playoffs.

It looked good for the Jets until the second half of their game against the G-Men, when the team folded and allowed their crosstown rivals to beat them down for all the country to see.

The Dolphins, of course, finished it off.

There's no secret there were problems in the locker room. Clearly this was a systemic failure on the part of the entire team and not just one player.

It wasn't the sole fault of the quarterback, the offensive coordinator, the star receiver or the coach and his defense. It's the whole team, and while the whole team is sharing their gripes with this move, the truth is they have nobody to blame but themselves.

That's for whatever reason you yourself believe the Jets brought Tebowmania to the Meadowlands.

Locker Room Presence

Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes reportedly had issues with each other, and you can throw the former offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, in the mix as well.

That's just a drop in the bucket as far as the problems behind the scenes for this team, but it gives way for a need to improve the team chemistry. Whether that's uniting the team with Tebow or against him and in favor of Sanchez is another story.

Jets players who were worried about what Tebow will do to the locker room is a pretty comical thought considering this same locker room was a complete and utter disaster during last season.

So in terms of him ruining the locker room, it was already ruined before he got here. Let's be fair.

A Backup

Sanchez regressed in his third year, and there isn't much debate about that fact.

That being said, questions have arisen about the viability of the former USC quarterback for the Jets moving forward. It's even been rumored head coach Rex Ryan might have lost some faith in Sanchez.

Had Sanchez gotten the job done last year, there would be no need for insurance policies and he'd have no reason to look over his shoulder for anyone, let alone Tebow.

Public Relations

Yes, Tebow brings plenty of press with him, and yes, he will sell more Jets jerseys while in New York.

Problem is, before Tebow, the Jets allowed the Giants to not only knock them out of playoff contention, the G-Men went on to win the Super Bowl and buried Gang Green somewhere near the middle of the newspaper.

Except for when the Jets had total team turmoil, which further embarrassed the organization. That's not exactly the type of press and attention New York is looking for.

And yes, being the talk of New York means a lot to Woody Johnson and the Jets. Clearly, they'll do anything to attain such a distinction.

So while the Jets as a team are complaining about the trade for Tebow, they should really point the finger back at themselves. Because without their no-show the last three weeks of last season and the lack of team unity, there would have been no excuse to bring Tebow to the Jets in the first place.
