Arnold Palmer Invitational 2012: Tiger Woods' Strong Play Is No Surprise

Austin GreenJun 6, 2018

Tiger Woods is tearing it up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and although he's gone through some well-documented troubles, his performance this week shouldn't be a surprise.

Despite his recent struggles in PGA events, Woods has always been comfortable at Bay Hill. He's won the tournament six times, including four straight from 2000-2003. His last win here came in 2009, when he birdied the 72nd hole to defeat Sean O'Hair.

This weekend, Woods has looked right at home in Orlando. He posted a solid 69 in the first round before stepping up his game in the second round. Woods was on fire Friday, hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation. He also sunk seven birdies and didn't bogey a single hole, finishing with a 65.

He cooled off a little on Saturday, but he's still sitting atop the leaderboard after shooting a 1-under 71. With some strong play on Sunday, he'll take home his seventh trophy at the Invitational.

Of course, Woods has been prone to collapses in recent months. He was tied for first in the final round of last year's Masters, but he finished tied for fourth. And in Abu Dhabi a few months ago, he had a share of the lead going into the final round, before mustering a 72 on Sunday.

So while Woods has looked good so far, his lead certainly isn't safe.

Given his lifetime dominance at Bay Hill, no one should be surprised that he's in the lead. But if you've been following Woods' saga the past few years, you also shouldn't be surprised if he chokes away another trophy.
