Floyd Mayweather Set to Fight Five More Matches Before Retiring
Unbeaten boxing champion Floyd Mayweather has said he will fight five more matches after his upcoming fight against Miguel Cotto before retiring from professional boxing.
In an interview posted on mlive.com after a training session last week, Mayweather talked about future foe Manny Pacquiao and his retirement plan. He also said he will remain active until he reaches 37 years of age.
In the article, Mayweather said he could still recall when Pacquiao fought in his HBO main-event undercard against Agapito Sanchez in San Francisco about 11 years ago.
"They said he was fighting when they were putting the chairs down. Or maybe when they were sweeping up the popcorn," Mayweather said.
Mayweather had also mentioned about his exasperation about the lawsuit Pacquiao has lodged on him for defamation, stemming from his alleged accusation of Pac-Man's use of performance-enhancing drugs.
"I can't really even speak on the situation," Mayweather said. "Any time I say anything, it's a lawsuit, we're always hearing from lawyers."
In his statement, Mayweather said he doesn't think anymore about Pacquiao. He said his main focus is his upcoming fight with Cotto.
But early this year, Mayweather told FyteHype.com that he doesn't want to fight anybody else but Pacquiao.
"I don't want to fight anybody else but him. Nobody! I want him. I don't want to fight Cotto. Not Canelo. And I ain't looking to fight Marquez a second time. Nobody! I want him! I only want one person, Pacquiao..."
And now, Mayweather and Cotto are scheduled to face each other in the ring on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev.
As Mayweather chose Cotto for his next fight, Pacquiao likewise chose unbeaten Timothy Bradley for his June 9 fight also at the MGM Grand.
As Mayweather announced his plan to fight actively until reaching the age of 37, Pacquiao has likewise said he is good for three more fights.
The Pacquiao vs. Mayweather super-fight remains a real possibility, especially if the both get past their respective opponents.
