World Football: UFC President Dana White Really Hates Soccer

Michael CummingsJun 7, 2018

Meet Dana White.

Dana is the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and he thinks soccer is "the least-talented sport on earth."

Yes, that's right. The most popular sport in the world is also the "least-talented."

As if a sport itself can be talented.

Semantics aside, that's what White told The Calgary Sun recently in a must-read interview.

"

I’m not a big hockey fan. But I respect how talented you have to be to play hockey. Soccer? That’s a whole other ball. Can’t stand soccer. It’s the least-talented sport on Earth. There’s a reason three-year-olds can play soccer. When you’re playing a game when the net is that big and the score is 3-1 (and that’s a blowout) are you kidding me? You know how untalented you have to be to score three times when the net is that big?

"

I'll get to that in a minute.

First, you really need to read the whole interview. After that, you need to read about this.

Now that you know who we're talking about, let's get to what he said.

There’s a reason three-year-olds can play soccer.

Yes, Dana, there is a reason. It's the same reason three-year-olds can fight each other. They just can.

What's that? You say that three-year-olds can't do all the hyper-athletic moves and don't have the incredible stamina required to be a UFC fighter?

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were implying that three-year-olds could do this, or this, or this, or even this.

My friend's 18-month-old son loves shooting hoops on his miniature basketball net. LeBron James and the NBA must be even less talented than soccer.

When you’re playing a game when the net is that big and the score is 3-1 (and that’s a blowout) are you kidding me?

Nope. Not kidding at all. By the way, that's not a blowout. This is a blowout, and so is this.

While we're here, though, you do know that every team has a goalie, right? Yeah, it's true, and those goalies usually stand at least six feet tall in that big, big goal.

Also, did you know that goalies can use their hands and dive and do whatever it takes to keep the ball out of the net?

No? Well, here are a few examples of how good goalies can make it hard to score three times on such a big, big goal.

It’s the least-talented sport on Earth.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. No, this is the least-talented sport on Earth. I mean, those guys are talking about putting beer bottles in their Olympic medals.

Sounds fun, no?

Just so we're clear, soccer fields are usually about 120 yards long and more than 70 yards wide. In addition, 22 players cover that vast area, with two teams of 11 working to stop the other and advance their own cause.

It's kind of like a battle, you see. Teams advance and retreat, they use tactics and strategies and the game ebbs and flows. All of that happens whether you can see it or not, and it goes on for 90 grueling minutes.

Now that you actually know a couple things about soccer, you're still saying it doesn't take any talent to do any of this?

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
