NFL Draft 2012: The Most Versatile First-Round Prospects

Chris TrapassoJun 6, 2018

The ability to successfully play multiple positions is an underrated quality of many first-round picks. Sure, being a master at one spot can yield great dividends, but oftentimes being multifaceted can make an offensive or defensive coordinator's life much easier.

These are the three most versatile prospects in this year's class.

Cordy Glenn, OL, Georgia

At 6'5'' and 345 pounds, Glenn has the massive frame to play either tackle position at the next level. While many believed he wasn't athletic enough to play on the edge, he displayed tremendous footwork at the combine in February.

His showing really opened the eyes of general managers, head coaches and scouts.

Whichever team drafts Glenn can play him at any offensive line position besides center. He'd be a mauling Carl Nicks-type left or right guard and with the size and experience in college, he can certainly kick out to those tackle spots.

Glenn's the type of trenchman I'd want on my team to build for the future.

Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

Cox played every defensive line position for the Bulldogs last season. He had 56 tackles, 14.5 for a loss along with five sacks.

At 6'4'' and nearly 300 pounds, he's big and strong enough to play end in a 3-4 alignment. He's aggressive with enough pass-rushing moves to get to the passer if asked to play on the edge in the 4-3. he even made a handful of plays as a penetrating defensive tackle last season and in the right situation, could do so in the NFL.

Cox exudes athleticism and really is a defensive coordinator's dream.

Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB South Carolina

I saved the best for last. Ingram is simply a phenomenal football player. Line him up anywhere and he'll make plays. At 6'1'' and 265 pounds, he's a bit shorter than you'd like for a defensive end, but he makes an impact with leverage, overwhelming strength and a full repertoire of pass-rushing counter moves.

He's as comfortable as they come in terms of dropping into coverage and has the unreal athletic ability to stay with most tight ends and even some running backs.

Ingram's ideal as 3-4 outside linebacker, but could play in a variety of roles in a 4-3 defensive scheme, too.

This South Carolina freak of nature will make someone's defensive significantly better and more complex next season.
