Viral Video of the Day: David James Scores in Own Net, Boosts Ticket Sales

Michael CummingsJun 6, 2018

Long live Calamity James. And ticket sales.

David James, occasional male model and goalkeeper of longstanding calamitous renown, was up to his old tricks again on Tuesday.

In the 15th minute of an English Championship match between James' Bristol City and Watford, the former England No. 1 scored a goal for the other team.

Shocking, I know. However, even for Calamity James, this was a howler.

Watford's Carl Dickinson played a long, not terribly dangerous cross into James' box, whereupon James tried to punch the ball away. Instead, he flicked the ball backwards into his own net.

But keep watching. After James' egregious error, neither he nor his teammates seem all that surprised.

Bristol lost the match, by the way, 2-0 to Watford.

For that, let's salute the calamitous one for another job well done.

James, as you might recall, represented England 53 times from 1997 until 2010. Now 41, James broke into the professional game with Watford way back in 1988.

From there, he moved on to Liverpool, where he helped the Reds win the League Cup in 1995. After stops at Aston Villa, West Ham United and Manchester City, James joined Portsmouth in 2006.

With James in goal, Pompey won the 2008 FA Cup final 1-0 over Cardiff City. Two years later, James signed with Bristol City in a move widely understood to be about boosting ticket sales.

How's that one turning out?
