Tim Tebow: Why New York Is Where TebowMania Will Cease to Exist

David LevinJun 7, 2018

The Big Apple is full of bright lights, big celebrities and big drama. All of this, and now it has Tim Tebow.

"TebowMania" has officially invaded New York and the NFL on the East Coast.

But having Tebow on the team does not necessarily mean this franchise will embrace the "rock-star" media circus of the "backup" quarterback.

It may have been fine when he was competing for the starting job in Denver or when he was embraced by fans who clearly wanted the third-string passer to make his way onto the field at Mile High Stadium. However, New York is a different kind of beast, and how he will be perceived may be a whole new ballgame.

These are reasons why Tebow and his "rock-star" image will regress and fade into the sunset in the city that never sleeps.

He Isn't "Broadway" Joe

1 of 6

Joe Namath is still the best quarterback the Jets ever had. And everything Namath accomplished over the years, good and bad, has been the measuring stick of every passer to come after him.

Those are pretty high standards to live by.

Tebow is not "Broadway Joe," and you wonder how he will handle being in the bright lights and big city.

Rex Ryan Is a Different Kind of Beast

2 of 6

Ryan is one of the few coaches who wants to outshine his players.

Can you see Ryan taking a backseat to his "backup" quarterback in the eyes of the media? Yikes.

And Ryan is the type of coach to throw around expletives like they are jelly beans.

Tebow has a thick skin, but he may attempt to get Ryan to ease up a bit. Could cause some tension.

The City Could Swallow Him

For everything he is, Tebow still likes home, the small town and the celebrity that comes with it.

Being a big fish in a little pond is one thing. Being a little fish in a huge pond is another.

In a city where you compete with Eli Manning, Jeremy Lin, Carmelo Anthony and the New York Yankees, Tim Tebow could be small potatoes.

Too Good for His Own Good

4 of 6

He needs a little more "fire" in him.

At least Mark Sanchez is linked to hot models and entertainers. Tebow lives a "bland" life in terms of athletes.

And if he ever got into trouble with the law, his celebrity would rise even more.

He is a great kid, but he is also Wally Cleaver in cleats.

The Media Will Eat Him Alive

5 of 6

Tebow is still an average passer at best. Mark Sanchez has a better arm and skill set.

If he replaces Sanchez at any time and does not win or looks bad, the media will have a world of hurt in store for him.

While he may play 15-20 snaps a game, he is still raw as far as I am concerned.

He Isn't as Good as He Thinks He Is

Tebow still has a lot to learn.

He can be the centerpiece of an offense when he learns to throw a real spiral and does not have to count on his legs to bail him out.

Like a commentator said on SportsCenter, if his name was not "Tebow," he would have been cut in training camp last year.

He is average at best.
