Tim Tebow to Jets: Why the Tebow Trade Is Baffling

Drew LaMarMar 22, 2012

Tim Tebow winding up in New York baffles me on a few levels, because I don't understand all of the differing reports that have been released regarding the whole trade.

He was given the option and chose the Jets over Jacksonville. The Jaguars' offer was better. I can't decipher what is real.

Based on the "value chart," the Jaguars actually offered more for the polarizing young football player. But despite the fact that nobody will ever pay me to run their football team, I have to believe that another draft pick is worth more to a team than an extra million toward a bonus.

If I'm wrong, which is rare, it means that Tebow truly did choose New York over his native Jacksonville. Bright lights, big city, more ability to share the gospel, perhaps?

It can't be a football decision, because Jacksonville might be one of the only places where they are less sure about their quarterback than New York. Tebow would probably be a starter after Blaine Gabbert threw even one interception because of his popularity in the region. The Jags would instantly sell tickets—something they desperately need to do to if they don't want to become Los Angeles' next franchise.

Tebow is billed as a great leader, and last season he most certainly was. But what do we not know about that situation? How many personalities are there in the Broncos' locker room compared to the Jets? Antonio Cromartie has already tweeted his distaste for the deal, so it's only a matter of time before the "everyone is thinking it, but nobody is saying it" ends and someone expresses disdain for Tebow.

The other confusing part is what the Jets want to do with Timmy. If this move is to put pressure on Mark Sanchez to step up, bad move. Athletes thrive on confidence, so not supporting your quarterback is a fatal error.

This feels like nothing but an attention-getter for Rex Ryan, who is holding onto hope that he can dominate the New York football scene tighter than he may be holding onto his job. But maybe he's found his savior.
