Viral Video of the Day: Sebastian Coates Scores Wonder Goal for Liverpool
Take heart, Liverpool fans. Wednesday night wasn't a complete bust.
OK, so maybe it was. But Sebastian Coates gave Scousers everywhere at least one reason to step back from the ledge.
That reason is this goal, which Coates scored in the 54th minute. It was the game's first strike, and for a while it looked like it would help Liverpool take all three points against relegation strugglers QPR.
It didn't. QPR came back from a 2-0 deficit and won 3-2. However, that shouldn't do anything to diminish Coates' goal.
Check out how high Coates leaps before striking the ball perfectly. What's more, he's sideways, several feet in the air, and he still hits an unstoppable volley past the keeper. That's impressive, and it's not a bad way to score your first goal for Liverpool.
What's even more impressive is the fact that Coates is a central defender. He wasn't the only central defender who scored Wednesday night in the English Premier League, but his was definitely the best strike.
In fact, Coates' goal might be the best of the English Premier League season so far. There are other impressive candidates, including Robin van Persie's stunning first-touch volley (turn down your speakers) against Everton and Frazier Campbell's dipping pile-driver for Sunderland against Norwich City.
But Coates' sideways scissor-kick might feature the best combination of skill, timing and athleticism so far this season. If not, it's at least a top contender.
