NFL Rumors: Joe Namath on Target with Latest Criticism of NY Jets

Richard LangfordMar 21, 2012

New York Jets legend Joe Namath likes to spew theories about his former team and occasionally they make sense. This happens to be one of those times.

Namath took to the ESPN Radio airwaves on Tuesday to talk about the Jets' trade for Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow, that briefly appeared to be official, but has since stalled. Here is a taste of what Namath had to say:

"

"I’m just sorry that I can’t agree with this situation. I think it’s just a publicity stunt. I can’t go with it. I think it’s wrong. I don’t think they know what they’re doing over there.

They give Sanchez a new contract, they pat him on the back and then they bring in two more quarterbacks."

It is the second part of that statement where his criticism of the Jets all comes together. Coupling Sanchez's recent contract extension with this move makes no sense.

Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News, reported Sanchez's extension to be worth a total of $58.25 million. That is a ringing endorsement of Sanchez being the future of this franchise.

Once they committed to Sanchez, they needed to start to do everything in their power to help him succeed opposed to making moves that would lead to his demise.

Tebow is a wildly popular QB. The moment he became a Jet he would have a legion of fans lining up to demand that he became the starter. That mass would grow every time that Sanchez threw a pick.

It would not be long before Sanchez would be greeted with a chorus of boos, in his own stadium, in the same fashion that Kyle Orton was last year when he was playing ahead of Tebow.

It is one thing to bring in a QB that would add a sense of motivation to Sanchez. It is another entirely to bring in someone whose presence would doom him to failure.
