WWE Historical Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc 1997

Drake OzMar 21, 2012

As part of the new WWE blog, I’ll be looking at a historical wrestler, match or manager every week.

This week’s treat? The phenomenal match between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc in 1997.

Mysterio and his real-life friend Eddie have a long history together, having risen to fame together in WCW’s cruiserweight division in the 1990s and faced off in that epic ladder match at SummerSlam in 2005. But never were these two more on than when they collided at Halloween Havoc.

At the time, Mysterio had just ended a feud with the NWO that culminated at the Road Wild pay-per-view when he lost a Mexican Death match to Konnan, and he slid into a feud with Guerrero, who was holding the WCW Cruiserweight Championship at the time.

Eventually, the rivalry between Guerrero and Mysterio would lead to a huge match at the Halloween Havoc pay-per-view. Mysterio would put his mask on the line, and Guerrero would put his Cruiserweight Championship on the line in a Mask vs. Title match.

What resulted was pure magic.

From the opening bell to the finish, the match lasted not even 14 minutes, but Mysterio and Guerrero proved in that short span that not all great matches need to last 25 or 30 minutes.

There was not a dull moment in this bout, with the crowd clearly behind the babyface Mysterio, but still managing to pop for the excellent wrestling we saw from Guerrero.

The chemistry between Mysterio and Guerrero was simply unbelievable, and for those who aren’t fans of Mysterio, I challenge you to watch this match, a true five-star classic, and then try to tell me that “Mysterio sucks.”

This was a prime example of what was so great about WCW’s cruiserweight division in the 1990s and how Mysterio managed to become so popular despite his size limitations.

He and Guerrero put on the best bouts of their careers here, and one could argue that this was indeed the best match in WCW history.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring orTwitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
