Tim Tebow Trade: Twitter Reacts as Broncos Ship Fallen Star to Jets

Jun 7, 2018

The most popular athlete in America is headed to the Big Apple.

As reported by Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com, Tim Tebow has been traded to the New York Jets:

"

Breaking news: Ny Jets have just traded a 4th round pick for Tim Tebow

This. Changes. Everything.

Just think about this for a second. Tebow is now on the same team as Mark Sanchez, and he'll be playing for a head coach in Rex Ryan whose personality is the exact opposite of his own. He's also joining a locker room that generates as much (or more) tabloid fodder as any team in the league.

I'm not sure what to make of the situation, to be honest.

And since I'm not sure what to make of this just yet, we'll head to Twitter to see what the Twitterverse is making of this.

UPDATE: Wednesday, March 21st at 10:17 p.m. EDT

After a bit of hemming and hawing (and actual reading of contracts), the Denver Broncos have agreed to a deal to send Tim Tebow to the New York Jets:

"

The Broncos have agreed to trade QB Tim Tebow to the New York Jets. More information: dbron.co/on

— Denver Broncos (@Denver_Broncos) March 22, 2012"

The Broncos will get back a fourth- and a sixth-round pick for Tebow, who will arrive in the Big Apple along with Denver's seventh-round pick.

UPDATE: March 21 at 3:20 p.m. EST

This trade isn't final just yet. In fact, it could fall apart completely.

ESPN's Adam Schefter has a couple scoops. Here's one:

"

Filed to ESPN (1): Denver and Jets have encountered hangup in language in Tim Tebow's contract that could nullify trade.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 21, 2012"

And here's the second:

"

(2) If the Tebow trade to Jets falls apart, St. Louis could wind up getting back into play. Sides sorting through details.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 21, 2012"

And a third:

"

Jets-Broncos agreed to Tim Tebow trade before Denver asked NY to pay back portion of bonuses and salary already paid to Tebow. No deal yet.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 21, 2012"

Nevertheless, it's not all bad. Schefter says there is still hope for this trade:

"

One league source said he believes Tim Tebow trade with Jets will go through. But contractual issues now complicating it.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 21, 2012"

Nothing's final yet. Just know that the reactions you're going to see below came when it looked like the trade was final

There are a lot of emotions running around out there, but Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports perfectly captured the reality of the situation with his take on the trade:

"

I hope Tim Tebow has huge success with the Jets. Hate to see him leave Denver, but it's a business and the Broncos made a business decision.

— Pat Forde (@YahooForde) March 21, 2012"

Keith Olbermann, on the other hand, doesn't sound too thrilled about the idea of Tebow coming to New York:

"

Did Tebow pray for punishment of the heathens ofNew York? #CuzWeJustGotPunished

— Keith Olbermann (@KeithOlbermann) March 21, 2012"

Don't worry, Keith. In reality, Tebow is headed to New Jersey. I'd be more worried about their sinners (most of whom are on MTV).

The sports world has spent a lot of time over the last few weeks obsessing over Jeremy Lin, who admitted at one point that he and Tebow had developed a friendship over the phone.

Linsanity has died down a lot recently, but now we're looking at a situation in which Lin and Tebow have to share the same city and the same market. This could be the start of a Rocky-style bromance.

The fake ESPN account thinks Lin could learn a lot from Tebow:

"

Tim Tebow is going to the Jets. With them both in NY, he can meet with Jeremy Lin to help him with his bounce pass.

— The Fake ESPN (@TheFakeESPN) March 21, 2012"

Comedian Matt Goldich thinks Tebow and Lin will share an honor someday:

"

Someday Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow will have monuments honoring them in Central Park: benches.

— Matt Goldich (@MattGoldich) March 21, 2012"

The humor didn't stop at Jeremy Lin. Mike Wise of the Washington Post took care of the inevitable Jenn Sterger (just ignore the misspelling) namedrop:

"

Tim Tebow just texted Jenn Sturges. Don't worry, it was Scripture.

— Mike Wise (@MikeWiseguy) March 21, 2012"

And the fake Bill Walton made the inevitable facepalm-worthy feet joke:

"

Rex Ryan loves Tim Tebow. He is a fresh young talent. He can heal the toxic locker room with his calming voice. Lastly, he has GREAT feet.

— The Bill Walton Trip (@NotBillWalton) March 21, 2012"

I mentioned above that Tebow is joining the NFL's biggest tabloid team, and that's a reality that is not lost on the Twitterverse. Seemingly everyone realizes that Tebow and Mark Sanchez are going to make for quite the odd couple, and things will get really interesting if the two of them start making headlines off the field.

Bruce Arthur of the National Post envisions this scenario:

"

OK, if there's a Mark Sanchez-Kate Upton-Tim Tebow love triangle, I'm moving to New York just to read the papers.

— Bruce Arthur (@bruce_arthur) March 21, 2012"

Chris Ballard of SI.com sees the bright side of all the potential hoopla:

"

Tim Tebow is about to do what the iPad and the internet couldn't: Save newspapers (at least in NYC).

— Chris Ballard (@SI_ChrisBallard) March 21, 2012"

Pro Football Focus, however, is more, um, focused on what Tebow and Sanchez do out on the field:

"

Under pressure only 4 QBs had a lower completion % than Sanchez ..... unfortunately for the Jets one of those was Tebow

— ProFootballFocus.com (@ProFootbalFocus) March 21, 2012"

There's no denying that the Jets haven't upgraded their quarterback situation by bringing in Tebow, but has this acquisition boosted the Jets' Super Bowl odds at all?

According to Covers.com, the answer is no:

"

Vegas bookmaker @JimmyVaccaro on Tim Tebow to Jets: "That story has no effect on Jets' Super Bowl odds either way."

— Covers.com Sports (@CoversSports) March 21, 2012"

Peyton's Head, however, is probably right on the money with these odds:

"

Tebow AND Sanchez in NY? The odds of someone being killed by an errant PepsiMax bottle just doubled.

— Peyton's Head (@PeytonsHead) March 21, 2012"

Elsewhere, there's a lot of intrigue over where Tebow didn't end up, and that's back home in Jacksonville with the Jaguars.

Darren Rovell of CNBC notes that the Jacksonville Jaguars have swung and missed on a huge opportunity:

"

Jaguars owner Shahid Khan just lost the chance to make a quick $15 million with Tim Tebow.

— darren rovell (@darrenrovell) March 21, 2012"

Even Brad Gilbert, a tennis expert, realizes that:

"

huge mistake for Jville not to give a 4th rd pic to get Tim Tebow, can not understand why they did not want the hometown boy

— Brad Gilbert (@bgtennisnation) March 21, 2012"

Oh well. Tebow is in New York now, and that's all that matters. All he can do now is hope to win over his new fan base.

Jimmy Traina of SI.com doesn't seem to like Tebow's chances:

"

As religious as Tim Tebow is, he'll quickly learn that no matter what he does, there is still one god in NYC: Derek Sanderson Jeter.

— Jimmy Traina (@JimmyTraina) March 21, 2012"

Traina also dropped this gem, which is a pretty good indication of how New Yorkers feel about the trade:

"

First caller to Mike Francesa on WFAN in NY after the Tebow trade: "I'm nauseous."

— Jimmy Traina (@JimmyTraina) March 21, 2012"

Regardless of how Jets fans feel about the trade, there is plenty of fun to be had now that Tebow is on the Jets. Clay Travis of Outkick the Coverage has come up with the best idea so far:

"

Hard Knocks has to go back to the Jets. Can you imagine Tebow when Rex Ryan is mid cursing rant? TV gold.

— Clay Travis (@ClayTravisBGID) March 21, 2012"

Yes it would be. Here's hoping we get to see it.
