Tim Tebow to New York Jets: Quick Predictions for QB's Future in the Big Apple

Timothy RappJun 5, 2018

I'll tell you, I just can't figure out the New York Jets.

First, they gave Mark Sanchez a three-year contract extension, a risky move in my opinion for a quarterback who hasn't proven to be a franchise player just yet.

But then they trade for Tim Tebow, a move that could ultimately prove to be a huge distraction in New York for a team that already has locker room distractions. Well, if it happens, that is. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN the trade might yet be nullified.

Filed to ESPN (1): Denver and Jets have encountered hangup in language in Tim Tebow's contract that could nullify trade.

UPDATE: Wednesday, March 21st at 9:45 p.m. EDT

The Broncos and the Jets were able to work out their differences and consummate the trade, per Denver's Twitter account:

"

The Broncos have agreed to trade QB Tim Tebow to the New York Jets. More information: dbron.co/on

Gang Green will also receive a seventh-round pick for its troubles, after sending a fourth- and a sixth-round pick back to the Mile High City.

Let's predict how this thing might play out in New York if the trade officially goes down.

The Jets Will Try to Make Tebow a Glorified Wildcat Weapon

Tony Sparano, the Jets' offensive coordinator and the man who brought the Wildcat formation into the NFL, has a new toy.

One thing the Jets need to do is reemphasize the running game, and adding Tebow will certainly do that, as he'll likely get at least 10 snaps every game out of the Wildcat and in red zone opportunities.

The one thing that always concerns me about running the Wildcat by adding a different quarterback into the game is that it can upset the flow of the game for the incumbent quarterback. And it could be detrimental to Sanchez to affect any flow he finds in a game.

You'll see a fair amount of Tebow next year in the Wildcat. Whether that is a good or bad thing for the Jets' offense remains to be seen.

When Sanchez Inevitably Struggles, Jets' Fans Will Pine for Tebowmania

Tebowmania is a cultural phenomenon. It grabs the citizens of a city and sucks them into its tidal wave of hype.

And the moment Sanchez struggles, Jets' fans will start screaming for Tebow to be handed the reins.

This is a problem for New York. I don't think they are bringing Tebow in as a pure backup quarterback—they want to utilize him as an offensive weapon but don't see him as a replacement for Sanchez in any way. That would be my assumption, at least.

I can't help but think this move undercuts any unconditional support the team was trying to establish for Sanchez by signing him to an extension. Tebow has supporters everywhere, and when he is on your roster, there will be a faction of fans who want to see him start.

This could wind up being just another distraction in New York.

Linsanity and Tebowmania in one city—good grief.

He'll Be a Good Citizen in a Wild West Locker Room

Rex Ryan has the reputation of keeping a fairly loose locker room, and that boiled over last offseason in a big way.

And Tebow isn't going to change that.

But he won't add to the problem, either, and his work ethic and attitude could rub off on a few of the younger guys on the team.

Then again, if Mark Sanchez isn't as hard of a worker, as was suggested by unnamed teammates, having the presence of Tebow could split allegiances on the team and cause additional locker room tensions.

You know what? The Jets' locker room is already akin to a bad soap opera, and Tebow is just another actor to add to the mix.

This is a strange marriage, no matter how you slice it. Annoying as it is, it will be one of the more scrutinized story lines heading into the 2012 season.

Hit me up on Twitter—I've tweeted from Lehigh's campus before. Seriously.
