Robert Griffin III: Insane Hype Won't Push Colts to Draft RG3 over Andrew Luck

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Robert Griffin III has been the most-talked about player leading up to the draft process. All that hype is going to make him a lot of money, but it won't be enough to push him ahead of Andrew Luck for the Indianapolis Colts with the No. 1 pick.

The latest analyst to get on the Griffin hype machine is ESPN's Merrill Hoge.

During an appearance on SportsCenter, Hoge, who said he watched over 120 hours of tape on both quarterbacks, said that he would take the Heisman Trophy winner with the first pick without hesitation.

Of all the attributes that Hoge evaluated, he was most impressed with Griffin's accuracy.

"

”This to me, you have to have. In college you have to display you have accuracy…His accuracy outside the numbers—short, intermediate, vertical—I was blown away. I could not believe the accuracy. He was better than Luck.”

There seems to be a major case of Luck overload and Griffin hype surfacing in NFL draft circles right now. It's natural, just because we get so tired of hearing about one player for so long that we want to find someone else to latch on to.

The problem is, Luck really did nothing this year to dispel the notion that he isn't one of the best quarterback prospects in NFL draft history.

Griffin had a flashy year with Baylor, which catapulted him to the Heisman Trophy. But as far as quarterbacking a team was concerned, no one was better, or more valuable, than Luck.

Nothing that Griffin does suggests that he is a better quarterback prospect than Luck. He might be a better athlete, and a worthy choice for the Redskins with the No. 2 overall pick, but he is not Luck.

No quarterback in recent draft history has had the whole set of attributes—size, strength, accuracy, leadership, intangibles, decision making—like Luck.

Hoge can make all the statements that he wants about how he would take Griffin over Luck, but that's why he is watching tape of these players for ESPN and not actually working in an NFL front office.
