Villarreal vs. Real Madrid: Yellow Submarine Won't Take Down Los Blancos

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

With Barcelona nipping at their heels, Real Madrid will take down Villarreal like a true La Liga front-runner should.

Real Madrid may not be in the best form headed into today's La Liga match against Villarreal, but that still doesn't mean that anything less than three points will be leaving with Madrid after another stirring clash.

While the draw with Malaga stings, Los Blancos have been burned far worse before. No amount of Catalan head-games will derail Real Madrid from their final push of the season.

Barcelona may be playing the best football in the world right now, but their deficit is insurmountable and the rest of La Liga is far too benign for Madrid to be upended.

This brings us to the Yellow Submarine that will fail to surface in Wednesday evening's match. In any other year, we might be talking about the possibility of a spirited draw, which would excite us to no end.

However, the fact is, Villarreal is running low on spirit currently, and that's exactly the kind of stuff they need in the uphill battle they are walking into at the Estadio El Madrigal.

They have lost five of their last six matches, with one draw against Athletic Bilbao in late February. Those sort of results usually mean that heads will roll, and they certainly did.

Miguel Angel Lotina will now coach this Villarreal side that is far too close to relegation than is comfortable. He is taking over for Jose Molina, who was fired on Sunday after a season of futility nearly became too much.

Villarreal may stave off the horrors of relegation, but it will be after matches like this, wherein they compete against much more poised and in form sides like Real Madrid.

The locker room is in shambles and the strategy will be new to a gripping team. There is simply no way to know how Villarreal will come out on the pitch after an already hard season took a devastating turn.

They are well back on their heels, and a team like Real Madrid only need push them slightly to see them topple.
