Lakers Rumors: Derek Fisher's Career Begins and Ends in Los Angeles

Gabe ZaldivarMar 21, 2012

Derek Fisher very well may join another team and could play an important part in their title run. The hope is that he one day comes back to the L.A. Lakers, which is a definite possibility.

One of the last rumors to be sewn up before the final playoff push is where Derek Fisher, a player with postseason success and experience, will go.

Marc Stein of ESPN puts it simply that the Oklahoma City Thunder are in the lead in that regard.

Fisher is scheduled to clear waivers at 6 p.m. ET Wednesday. One source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com that Fisher is "very close" to committing to sign with the Thunder once he becomes a free agent.

ESPN.com reported Monday the Thunder and the Miami Heat had emerged as the two frontrunners to sign Fisher...

"

This comes on the heels of a report from HoopsWorld's Steve Kyler that states the following in regards to Fisher and his former club.

"

The end of Derek Fishers’ playing career may not be as near as once thought. Fisher who reached a contract buyout with Houston on Sunday is considering overtures from Miami and from Oklahoma City...

Sources say there is an offer from the Lakers to join the basketball operation staff, however such a move would require Fish to retire and sources near Fish say he is not ready to hang them up just yet.

"

Fisher can join any team after Wednesday, and is only precluded from joining back with his old club until next year.

There are two ways that I see Fisher making it back to Los Angeles, making a reunion with the team an inevitability when you consider how much he has meant to this franchise.

If he does indeed join the Thunder or another team, he would prove to be an indispensable veteran as he has for the Lakers in the past.

Any success on that stage may see him welcome a subsequent one-year contract next season. A veteran with his class and ability in the clutch would be invaluable to a team like the Lakers at some point next season.

If that is a pipe dream, there is always the front office, which also needs an overhaul at the moment. Adding a quality personality like Fisher to any part of the organization would be a tremendous boost.
