Lionel Messi Scores His 233rd Goal for Barcelona: Watch the Record Breaker

Lionel Messi has added another record to his resume for the best football player who has ever lived.

At just 24, the little Argentine has become the top goalscorer in the rich tradition of Barcelona FC.

He did so with the second of his three goals against Granada in Barca's La Liga match today.

Barca went on to win the match 5-3, momentarily cutting the deficit they suffer to Real Madrid, their arch-rivals, to five points.

As you can see, there was a tiny hint of offside in the goal; however, the finish was incredible.

And yet, we as a footballing public have grown so accustomed to the greatness of Messi that it seems a ho-hum goal by his lofty standards.

The perfectly timed run and sublime chip by the "little genius," as the lunatic commentator Ray Hudson delights in saying, would have been celebrated for most other players, but are merely routine for Leo.

Historically, though, the goal's significance is unquestionable.

What's more, it is likely that Messi will go on to thoroughly surpass the Barca record throughout his career, setting a mark that dwarfs the accomplishments of those who came before him and may never be equaled.

After all, in the past three seasons, he has scored 47, 53 and now 54+ goals for the Catalan club.

And with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Madrid's forward, to push him (he has 33, 53 and now 42+ in the same time frame), there is no fear of Messi being content with his place in the annals of the sport.

Further, with Barca constantly chasing higher and higher peaks and fending off new challengers, there will always be something to play for.

Leo is certainly making an incredible case to be thought of alongside the likes of Pele and Diego Maradona.

Now all he needs is to show his worth on the international stage and there will be no more argument.
