NCAA Tournament 2012 Schedule: Sweet Sixteen Matchups You Simply Can't Miss

Paul GrossingerMar 20, 2012

It's time for the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen!

This year, there are two matchups you simply can't miss: Syracuse vs. Wisconsin and Kentucky vs. Indiana.

First, No. 1 seed Syracuse will take on No. 4 seed Wisconsin on March 22 at 7:15 p.m. EST. This is a can't miss matchup because it features top seeds, great upset potential and two very different styles.

A couple weeks ago, Syracuse would have been the prohibitive favorite in this matchup. The Orange went 31-2 overall, and 17-1 in the Big East, which made Syracuse one of the top two regular season teams in college basketball.

The Orange had a prolific offense, underrated defense and phenom Fab Melo in the middle. But Melo was ruled ineligible for the tournament and Syracuse has looked shaky in the opening rounds without its star center. The Orange were almost upset in the first round by No. 16 seed UNC Asheville before pulling away 72-65 at the very end.

Wisconsin is an entirely different story: a bruising, defense-oriented team that is peaking right now. The Badgers went 26-9 in the regular season with notable losses to North Carolina, Michigan and Michigan State. But they are led by star point guard Jordan Taylor and have the type of rebounding defense that will make things very difficult for Syracuse inside the post.

So, while Syracuse is still the better team on paper, the matchup favors Wisconsin and it will be tough, close battle without Fab Melo to save the Orange.

Second, No. 1 seed Kentucky will battle No. 4 seed Indiana on March 23 at 7:15 p.m. The Wildcats are the NCAA's best team and the favorite in this matchup.  But Indiana is a young, rising, feisty team that will make it tough on the tournament favorites. Kentucky may have breezed through their opening matchups but their battle with the Hoosiers won't be easy.

In particular, watch the matchup between Kentucky power forward Anthony Davis and Indiana center Cody Zeller. Davis is the best player in college basketball and the consensus No. 1 pick in the draft.

He is gifted offensively and a truly special defensive player. Zeller is the talented younger brother of star North Carolina center Tyler Zeller and one of the best post players in the tournament. Indiana may be an underdog here but if Zeller can best Davis then the Hoosiers have a chance.

So, no matter what, be sure not to miss it!
