2012 Free Agency: 8 Signings That Will Get Coaches Fired
The first wave of free agency has come and gone, and numerous teams have decided their future. Some teams made prudent moves that will help them get to the next level.
Other teams, though, have doomed themselves to mediocrity through expensive contracts and risky personnel moves.
This is about those other teams. These teams will likely struggle for wins in 2012, and it will be because of the moves they made in free agency.
Here are the eight free agent signings most likely to get coaches fired.
Mario Williams
1 of 8To be fair, Mario Williams won't be directly responsible for the Bills' likely miserable season in 2012. The responsibility for that will fall on Chan Gailey, Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bills porous run defense.
With a quarterback who led the NFL in interceptions last year and minimal talent, the Bills will be bad in 2012. Signing Mario Williams does not change that.
Unfortunately for Chan Gailey, the man writing the checks, Ralph Wilson, will want to see results from his $100 million free agent. That just won't happen.
Basically, the Williams signing raises expectations to unrealistic levels. The Bills will be just as bad as ever in 2012, and Chan Gailey will be fired if the Bills don't improve.
Randy Moss
2 of 8Few coaches survive Randy Moss.
Jim Harbaugh is outspoken and brash, and Randy Moss will likely have trouble dealing with that. He could cause a rift in the locker room that would bring the 49ers back into the dredges of the NFL.
While Harbaugh might be able to keep the locker room strong, signing Moss is a huge risk that could implode the entire team, and Harbaugh's job with it.
Mike Brisiel
3 of 8Brisiel is actually a quality guard, but his big contract could hurt the Raiders' ability to acquire more talent.
The Raiders still have so many holes, signing a guard to a big deal just doesn't seem particularly prudent. Brisiel will have to play like one of the top guards in the league to earn this deal.
To be fair, being the Raiders coach is really just a temporary job anyway. With a lack of talent and a mediocre quarterback in Carson Palmer, the Raiders will probably find themselves looking for yet another coach in 2013.
Laurent Robinson
4 of 8His career high in receptions is 54, yet Laurent Robinson was signed to a five year, $32.5 million contract, with $14 million guaranteed.
The Jaguars needed receiver help, but Robinson is hardly a top receiver. Don't be surprised when Robinson doesn't live up to that big contract.
To be fair, he won't have a decent quarterback throwing to him, as Blaine Gabbert was horrific in 2011.
With the Gabbert to Robinson connection failing miserably in 2012, don't be surprised if the Jaguars make another coaching change in 2013.
DeSean Jackson
5 of 8A me-first, one dimensional wide receiver, DeSean Jackson's re-signing with the Eagles only hurts them long term.
Perhaps one of the most overrated players in the NFL, Jackson has just average hands and marginal toughness. He is only capable of deep patterns, and teams can stop that with ease.
If the Eagles falter, it will be because of their passing game, and DeSean Jackson could be the target of the fans' and media's scorn.
Perhaps that, finally, could get Andy Reid fired.
Robert Meachem
6 of 8Presumably, the Chargers signed Robert Meachem to replace the deep-threat capability of Vincent Jackson.
If that's the case, they will be sorely disappointed.
Meachem is not bad by any means, but he is not Vincent Jackson, and he is not worth $14 million in guaranteed money.
Without Jackson spreading out defenses, the Chargers' offense could struggle in 2012. They are only one bad season away from Norv Turner losing his job.
Pierre Garcon
7 of 8If the Redskins stumble in 2012, someone will have to take the blame. It will probably be the passing game.
After drafting Robert Griffin III and signing Garcon, Dan Snyder is going to expect fireworks in 2012. If he doesn't get them, and it's unlikely that he will right away, then Mike Shanahan will have to pay.
Shanahan has already had a surprisingly long tenure considering the Redskins' recent history, and he will be on a short leash in 2012. If Garcon is not an elite target for Griffin, it could be the final straw.
Matt Flynn
8 of 8Acquiring a new quarterback is always risky, especially when that quarterback is a former seventh round draft pick with two career starts.
Flynn is a solid talent who should fit in well with Seattle, but that's also what was said about Charlie Whitehurst.
Whitehurst was an absolute bust, and it's hard to see how the Flynn signing is that much different.
If Flynn falters, the Seahawks will have a void at quarterback in 2012, and Pete Carroll will have a very hard time holding on to his job.
