Does Yao Ming Want Tracy McGrady Out of Houston?

Jaime IrvineJan 14, 2009

According to David Aldridge at NBA.com, the Rockets may be getting tired of McGrady and want to ship him out of town.

Apparently, their other star, Yao Ming, feels the same way.

“They don’t speak,” an extremely plugged-in person tells me. “And Yao wants him out.”

Unfortunately for the Rockets and Yao, moving McGrady is highly unlikely this season. T-Mac is owed $20.3 million this season and his contract is too much of a burden, along with his health, for any team to pull the trigger on him. However, next season his expiring contract of $22.4 will be coming up and the Rockets will have a much better opportunity of moving him.

In my opinion, McGrady is soft, not a winner, and plays terrible defense—not a good combination. He has all of the talent in the world and could be a top-five player easily, except he does not have that “killer instinct” so many coaches long for.

I have said and still believe that you cannot win an NBA championship with McGrady, he just does not have the makeup of a champion.

In the NBA, championships are won by players with toughness and who love to compete. If you look at the past champions, you see players who do not back down from any opponent and will their way to victory. It is next to impossible to try and name a superstar who was a champion that did NOT have that killer instinct and toughness to grit out a victory.

Now, look at McGrady. Do you see the same player? I don’t.

With McGrady’s talents, you may be able to be a winning team, a playoff-bound team, but a championship team you will not be.
